Lauren Hemp plays football for Manchester City in the English women’s super league (FA WSL) and the Lionesses of England. So young and yet so promising, the forward picked the England Young Player in 2017, as well as the  PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

She fell in love with the game of soccer at a tender age courtesy of her family’s love for sports; kicking starting her youth club career with North Walsham Youth FC and later Norwich City.

Hemp is the part of the young generation of players that England is currently modeling to replaced the older ones. She has proven her quality with the ball despite playing in a team that is filled with lots of senior players with more experience.

Her parents Kevin and Julie Hemp gave birth to her as Lauren May Hemp on the 7th of August 2000 in a small market town of North Walsham, Norfolk, England. She grew up alongside her sister Amy who played football too.

Hemp started her early education at Millfield Primary School and enrolled at Walsham High School for her higher education.

It is amazing to be raised in a family that loves soccer, having a sister who allows you to follow her to her training sessions and matches. And parents that would always come and watch the game you play in.

Since she always tags along whenever her big sister goes to play, Hemp quickly fell in love with football when she was just 5. Despite being a girl playing in a team of boys, she quickly got adapted to the way the game is played. And today she has established herself as a fine young talent in English women’s football.

Lauren Hemp’s Career Rise

Thanks to her sister Amy, Lauren ventured into football at a young age. She started playing in a boy’s team at the age of 8. And by the time she cloaked 10, the forward was at the Norwich Center of Excellence, where she spent 5 years until its closure.

While all this was going on, she was picked to join England’s under-15 side when she was 13.  However, when the Norwich Center of Excellence was close shut down, she was left with two choices; join another boy’s team or forfeit soccer completely.

She opted for the former and joined North Walsham Boy’s under-16 team, and went to play for a year with the Norwich City Elite Boys team. When she reached 16, Hemp had to make a decision for a career path; to give up football or chase the game she is fond of.

Her love for the game took over and she continued; signing for Bristol City in 2016. She made her first appearance for the club netting a goal in a 4-1 win over Watford.

Hemp’s stunning strike against Arsenal at the age of 17 got nominated for a goal of the season award. And suddenly big English clubs started coming for her.

In May 2018, the forward joined Manchester City.

Internationally, she represented England at the under-15, 17, 19, 20, and 21 levels. She was also captain of the under-17 side at the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship in May 2017. Her contributions to England’s under-20 side saw the team finished 3rd at the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

The young forward was handed her first international debut for the senior side when she was introduced in the 86th minute in a 1-0 friendly win against Portugal in October 2019.

She was also selected as part of the women’s Olympic team to represent Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics.

1. She Started Playing Football Without Football Boots

Hemp who got the inspiration to start playing soccer from her sister Amy didn’t mind to go kicking the ball without a pair of boots. She played with her crocs. This shows her love and passion for the game even as a child.

2. Hemp Broke Her Jaw At 6

She suffered a broken jaw at the age of 6 when her sister pushed her off a trampoline. However, the injury she sustained didn’t do enough to kill her spirit and love for the game of soccer.

3. She Is Family Oriented

Lauren Hemp loves being with her family and having them around. Although football has taken her away from home, she couldn’t help but reminisce over a time when her parents would come and watch her play.
