The FIFA World Cup has always been football’s biggest stage, culminating in very exciting outcomes every four years, but the 2026 edition promises something even more special than we have ever seen.

With 48 teams set to compete across North America, this tournament is expected to be the most unpredictable and wide-open in history. And we can’t wait to see the outcome this time!

From traditional powerhouses like Spain, France, Brazil, Germany, and Argentina to surprise qualifiers such as Cape Verde, Jordan, and Uzbekistan, the World Cup 2026 competition brings together a mix of elite talent and inspiring underdogs.

Defending champions Argentina return with captain Lionel Messi still playing a leadership role, while European giants Spain, France, and England are all aiming to dethrone them. At the same time, emerging sides like Japan, Morocco, and Senegal believe they can shock the world.

Ahead of the highly anticipated official kickoff, here is a power ranking of all 48 teams based on form, squad strength, and recent performances.

Spain Lead the Pack as Clear Favourites

Despite their star player, Lamine Yamal’s injury, Spain are the clear favourites!

  • Spain head into the tournament as the most complete team on paper. Their midfield control, tactical discipline, precision, and youthful energy make them the benchmark for others.

Even though questions remain about their finishing and reliance on key players like Lamine Yamal, their overall structure gives them an edge over everyone else at the moment.

This is why we say that if they maintain fitness and momentum through the knockout rounds, Spain could easily lift the trophy ahead of every other contender at the World Cup 2026.

The Big Challengers: Argentina, France, and England

Of course, Spain will face a serious hurdle from challengers. Teams like Argentina and France as well as England are gunning to brush past them to lift the trophy.

  • Argentina arrive as defending champions, still built around Lionel Messi but now less dependent on him than in 2022. Players like Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez have matured into reliable leaders. This alone makes them even more formidable than in 2022 when they lifted the World Cup trophy.
  • France remain a powerhouse with depth in every position. And their star player, Kylian Mbappé leads one of the most dangerous attacking units in world football, supported by a strong defensive core.
  • England, now under Thomas Tuchel, continue to search for consistency. On paper, they have one of the strongest squads, but questions remain about mentality in big matches. However, they appear to be one of the strongest contenders for this year’s World Cup title.

Other Elite Contenders at the World Cup 2026

Other contenders like Portugal, Brazil, and Germany complete the top tier of challengers going into the World Cup 2026. These teams are known to contend at high levels and can turn the tide to their favour at any given moment.

  • Portugal boast one of the most balanced midfields in the tournament, while Brazil are still trying to find cohesion despite their enormous talent pool. However, despite Neymar’s injury, they are among the most dangerous sides at the World Cup.
  • Germany, meanwhile, look revitalised and are beginning to resemble their old dominant selves again under Julian Nagelsmann.

The Dangerous Dark Horses

Several teams outside the traditional elite contenders could make deep runs. These are teams that have potential to stun even the most elite contenders at every World Cup edition.

  • Japan continue to improve rapidly and have already beaten top nations in recent friendlies. Senegal remain physically strong and tactically disciplined, while Morocco still carry momentum from their historic 2022 semi-final run.
  • Norway, led by Erling Haaland, also cannot be ignored if their stars stay fit.

Teams That Could Surprise At the World Cup 2026

The World Cup is often to have surprises every edition and this year’s edition will be no different. We expect to see some shock comebacks and surprise showings.

Mid-tier nations like Switzerland, Netherlands, Colombia, and Belgium remain unpredictable. On their day, each of them can beat top opposition, but consistency remains their biggest issue.

Mexico and the United States will rely heavily on home support, while Turkiye’s young attacking talent makes them a potential shock package. These teams have the potential to spring surprises at this World Cup tournament.

The Underdogs

In every World Cup edition, there are teams generally considered underdogs specially debutants. The 2026 World Cup also features several debutants and returning underdogs, including Curacao, Jordan, Cape Verde, Iraq, Haiti, and Uzbekistan.

For most of these teams, progression to the knockout stage would already be considered a huge success. Their presence alone reflects how global the competition has become.

Despite being the underdogs, these teams have not come to watch themselves being thrown under the bus. They will fight till the ever end and this is why we expect to see surprises that may leave us shellshocked at the World Cup 2026.

The expanded 2026 World Cup creates more uncertainty than ever before. This is the first time we will be seeing 48 teams compete at the World Cup stage and one thing we are sure of is that surprises will be abundant.

While Spain appear best placed to dominate, the gap between the top nations has narrowed significantly, and countries like Argentina can retain their crown or England can finally bring it home.

With rising teams improving fast and traditional giants still rebuilding, this tournament may not follow the usual script.

One thing is certain: football fans are in for a dramatic summer.
