His father, Roy Jones Sr. is an ex-club fighter, retired aircraft engineer, and decorated Vietnam war veteran who “Sparred” with Jones Jr. and encouraged him to be a professional boxer, but he never made it easy for Roy while growing up.
Roy’s father had his own boxing gymnasium, upon which he devoted his financial resources and every available time he could spare. He mentored several youths at his gym, using the opportunity of his training to steer them away from getting into trouble. Roy Sr, was especially hard on his son, never giving him the “comforting arms” fathers are meant to put around their sons.
He taunted him, yelled extensively at him, and sometimes assaulted him, all in the bid to “toughen” him up. Many who witnessed Roy Sr’s physical and verbal abuse of his son, termed it an “out-and-out abuse”, but he had a good reason for being very hard on his son; Roy Sr believed it was the best way to toughen up his son and make him a world champion.
