Matheus Cunha is a Brazilian attacking sensation currently playing in Spanish La Liga for Atletico Madrid and the Brazil national team. He was invited to the national team in 2020 during the Qatar FIFA 2022 World Cup qualification games against Bolivia and Peru.

He was born on 27th May 1999 in Joao Pessoa, Brazil to his parents Carmelo and Luziana Cunha. He was raised in his hometown alongside his only sister Mariah. While growing up as a child, he loved watching soccer games and was passionate about playing Futsal, an indoor soccer game usually played on a hard court, which was similar to a five-a-side football.
His parents were excited when they noticed his growing desire for football. Regardless of that, they made sure it didn’t impede his growth in other areas of life. In as much as he loves football, education was important, so they ensure Cunha and his sister Mariah had a good one.

His football journey didn’t begin at Coritiba as mostly reported, he started earlier with a local team Cabo Branco. Later on, he joined CT Barao in Recife.
He joined Coritiba when a businessman fell in love with the way he plays and together with his father, brought him to the club at the age of 14. He was there for 4 years rising through the club’s ranks, preparing his way for a football journey that would take him outside the shores of Brazil.
His hard work yielded dividends when scouts from Sion took notice of his soccer abilities and recommended him to the club for a transfer. When the news of his possible move to Europe was announced by his manager, Cunha didn’t think twice before accepting, for he always wanted to play in Europe.
At the age of 17, he moved to the Swiss club where he played for a year before signing with German Bundesliga side Rb Leipzig in 2018 for a fee of €15 million. Since the club had an attitude of always building young players, the forward was no exception. He was given the opportunity to blossom and he did well.
On 31st January 2020, he signed a 4-and-a-half-year deal worth €18 million with Hertha BSC. A year and some months after, he joined Atletico Madrid in a 5-year contract worth €30 million on 25th August 2021.
