He was born John Anthony Nicholas Gargano on 14 august 1987 in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, Francis Gargano owned restaurant business. Johnny claims his descent to Italy on his father’s side and Poland on his mother’s side. He is currently 37 years old.
Johnny started showing interest in wrestling from an early age. He entered a professional wrestling ring at the age of eight.

On 14 June 2008, he made his debut for Chikara but was later eliminated in the Young Lions Cup Tournament.
