Astra Sharma was born on September 11 1995 in Singapore. She grew up in Australia after her parents moved to Perth, Western Australia in 2005. Her father, Devdutt Sharma is a Singaporean Indian with roots in Uttar Pradesh Northern India. Her mother is a Singaporean Chinese. Astra is currently 30 years old.

She attended Applecross Senior High School . Astra spent time training at the Bullcreek Tennis Club near Willeton training in her junior years.

Astra’s name is from the  Astras, a supernatural weapon wielded by the Hindu gods. She also has brother, Ashwin and a sister, Tara.  While growing up she played football before settling to play professional tennis.

Her father attended school at Raffles Institution before moving to the National University of Singapore. He may have earned an engineering degree at school because he worked as an acoustic engineer for years.
