Georginio Wijnadum was born Georginio Gregion Emile Wijnaldum on November 11, 1990, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He was raised alongside his brother Giliano Wijnaldum, and half-brother Rajiv van La Parra in Rotterdam by his parents, Maureen Wijnaldum and Ramon van La Parra.
At the age of 6 his mum and dad, who are both of Afro-Surinamese ethnicity, ended their marriage. Following the split, his mother relocated to Amsterdam. But, he made a choice to stay in Rotterdam and moved in with his grandmother. He lived with her for the rest of his childhood.
While growing up, the 34-year-old had no interest in football. In fact, he never kicked a ball or watch it being played on TV. He only dreamed of becoming a gymnast or acrobat.
