John Fury hails from a family of professional boxers. Throughout his career span of eight years, he was involved in 13 bouts. However, he is more famous as the father of the two-time heavyweight boxing world champion Tyson Fury and also reality television star and boxer Tommy Fury.

The former boxer and bare-knuckle fighter is a well-respected figure in the boxing world and also among the Irish Travellers community. Aside from his career, he has been in the news for all the wrong reasons as well. Fury was imprisoned in 2010 and he got out in 2015.

1. John Fury Comes from a Long Line of Bare-Knuckle Fighters

Born May 19, 1964, into a family of Irish travelers, John was raised in Tuam Galway. Aside from boxing, his family is known to be bare-knuckle fighters. Fury claimed he has been involved in hundreds of bare-knuckle bouts.

Some of his family members that are bare-knuckle fighters include Bartley Gorman, Uriah Burton, and Bartholomew Gorman. His family reportedly has Gaelic roots.

2. He is Apparently not the Only Boxer in His Family

The Fury family has a long history in boxing. Fury competed in the 1980s and had a professional record of 8-4-1. His professional boxing career spanned eight years.

Aside from John, his son Tyson Fury is a two-time world heavyweight champion and his other son Tommy Fury made his professional debut on 22 December 2018.

Others include Hughie Fury, Nathan Gorman, and Hosea Burton.

3. His Wife Had 14 Pregnancies But Only Four Survived

John Fury and Amber Fury married a long time ago. Amber reportedly had quite a lot of miscarriages and stillbirths. Out of her 14 pregnancies, only four survived for a short while. Tyson seems to be the only surviving child of the pair.

Notwithstanding, John has fathered other children with a couple of women also. However, there are reports that the former boxer’s five children all have different mothers.

Fury’s son Tyson was born three months premature. At birth, he weighed 1 pound and the doctors told him his son had no chance of living. Having lost his daughters to premature birth, Fur decided to name his son after the great Mike Tyson.

John revealed Tyson Fury was a fighter from birth and his strength helped him conquer death.

5. He Trained His Son in Boxing Until 2011

Tyson Fury started boxing at the age of 10. From that time until 2011, his father was his trainer. After Fury went to prison, Hughie Fury continued training the younger Fury until he died in 2014. Also, Peter Fury trained him as well.

6. John Fury was Charged for Gouging a Man’s Eye in a Brawl in 2010

According to reports, the former boxer was found guilty of inflicting injury in other to cause bodily harm for trying to plunge out someone’s eyes. The incident happened at a car auction in 2010. Fury had his victim, Oathie Sykes in a headlock and forced his fingers into his eyes. The victim was allegedly left half-blind after the ordeal.

John Fury was released from prison in 2015 even though he was given an 11 years sentence. Gypsy John as he was known before only served four years in prison.

7. John Fury Has Featured in Several Shows and Documentaries

John Fury has reported made appearances on several shows, pre-recorded programs, and documentaries. He appeared on the ITV show, This Morning in February 2020 and discussed the health of his son Tyson.

8. He Has Agreed to Fight Dillian Whyte’s Father

Following their feud, Dillian Whyte challenged John Fury to face his father in a Bare-Knuckle Fight. This challenge came after Fury was branded as an ‘idiot’ by the Jamaican-born wrestler.

Fury accepted the challenge on the condition that it would come after Tyson and Dillian’s highly anticipated title fight on 23 April 2022.

The former boxer has confidence he would beat Whyte’s father and brother, Dean at the same time.

Although Tyson had earlier revealed the fight would be his last, his father does not believe so.

9. The 60-Year-Old Has Quite a Number of Grandchildren

Coming from a relatively large family, John Fury has a large family himself. His son Tyson alone has birthed him six grandchildren: three boys who are all named Prince and three daughters with his wife Paris.

10. What is John Fury’s Net Worth?

The controversial Irish cornerman reportedly has an estimated net worth of $2 million. Meanwhile, his son Tyson has been more successful as a boxer than he was. He is said to have a net worth of around $30 million. His net worth includes the $28 million minimum guarantee that he earned from his rematch with Deontay Wilder.

His fight with Whyte would reportedly earn him $29.5million while Whyte purses $7.4million.
