Gaetane Thiney Biography, Early Life

Gaetane Thiney was born in Troyes, France, on October 28, 1985. She had discovered her passion for football from a tender age and from 1990-1998 she was engaged in the youth programs Brienne-le-Chateau as well as the Olympique Saint-Memmie which she joined in 1998.

She grew up in a football-loving family with a father who is a football coach and a mother always there to support her. More so, she has older brother and sister.

Professional Career

Gaetane has developed her skills since she was very young, she took a step further by traveling for miles away from home to a community called Brienne-le-Château, where she went to join the ASS Brienne-le-Château team under the umbrella of the youth program.

She then advanced to join the Olympique Saint-Memmie which was under the French women’s first divisional Football league.

Gaetane’s stay at the Olympique Saint-Memmie lasted 6 seasons before she eventually joined the US Compiègne Oise in Compiègne where she featured in 21 matches for the club and put five goals into the net.

Unfortunately, the club finished at the bottom of the league table and was relegated to division 2 of the Féminine league.

Under that division, Gaetane made a tremendous impact as she featured in 18 games and 20 goals in the process. She was then named the player of the year.

As a result of her outstanding performance, she was invited to join the women’s national team and the top leading club which was the FCF Juvisy. While with the club, she played in 21 games and scored seven goals helping the club to finish 3rd in the league.

Following the creation of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Gaetane shinned on for her team during the 2009–10 season, as she scored nine goals helping Juvisy to advance to the playoffs where they were defeated in the finals by Lyon.

She also recorded high performance during the season by scoring 11 goals, which made her the second-highest goalscorer even though Juvisy still finished in 4th place.

International Career

On the international front, her performance is not any less. Gaetane made her first appearance on international level on the 28th of February, 2007 in the game against China, where her team won 2–0. During the qualifiers for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2009, she scored a brace against Slovenia and Serbia.

Her effort only helped France advance to the quarterfinals before losing to the Netherlands 4–5 on a penalty shootout.

Gaetane recorded her first hat trick on 28 October 2009, in a 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification match against Estonia where they trashed Estonia 12–0 victory.

From then, she continued getting more playtime for the country. Most recently, she got the call to play for the French team at the 2019 FIFA World Cup. France got knocked out by the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
