Lucy Staniforth Biography
Lucy Elizabeth Staniforth was born on the 2nd day of October in the year 1992. The footballer was born in York, a walled city in northeast England. Lucy hails from a football-loving family and this fact must have helped to spark her interest in the sport from an early age.
Her father, identified as Gordon Staniforth, used to be a footballer who played for Hull City and York City as well as other clubs. Also, her brother Tom Staniforth was also a footballer who had played for Sheffield Wednesday but sadly, he died in his early 20s. Lucy, who was very fond of Tom, has always seized the opportunity to pay tribute to him and keep his memory alive. Throughout her career, she has always won the number 37 which happens to be Tom’s old number. Also, she once revealed a t-shirt paying tribute to Tom after scoring a goal for her team.
Lucy had her primary education at Copmanthorpe Primary School where she learned the game of playing in the boy’s team of the school. She later attended the University of Gloucestershire.
Lucy Staniforth Professional Football Career
When she was just 16 years old, Lucy became a member of Sunderland first team and she hit the ground running. In her first season with the team she helped Sunderland to advance to the playoffs and subsequently winning the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division. Again, Sunderland was able to reach the finals of the 2009 FA Women’s Cup but they were not too lucky as the match ended in a 2-1 defeat by Arsenal.
By 2010, Lucy left Sunderland and joined Lincoln Ladies. While in Lincoln, she started in all the games during the FA WLS for the team, scoring 3 goals. However, Sunderland managed to finish at fourth place in that season.
Upon leaving Lincoln in December 2012, Lucy signed with Bristol Academy, and her presence in the Academy helped the team to reach the final playoffs. Again her club lost the trophy to Liverpool. Unfortunately, Lucy suffered a knee injury during the finals which kept her off the pitch for a while.
Following her recovery, Lucy decided to join Liverpool in February, 2014 However, within the pre-season, she was involved in yet another injury which affected her anterior cruciate ligament. Consequently, she remained on the bench during the 2014 FA WSL season but Liverpool still went on to win the league title for that season which became their second consecutive FA WSL trophy.
However, by January 2016 Lucy made a move back to her former team Sunderland under a two-year contract. Her second coming to the club was more powerful as she rose up to the position of the captain of the team, while scoring 4 goals in the 2017 FA Women’s Cup. She was able to sustain her improved form to the 2018 season where she scored her first hat trick and a brace thus, earning the award of Sunderland’s Player of the season for that year. Also, her goal was nominated for the Goal of the Season at the FA WSL Awards.
After the season in 2018, Lucy accepted a deal to join Birmingham City and since then she has played 19 games for the team scoring 2 goals. She is still with the club to this day.
International Career
Apart from taking part in club football, Lucy has also played for her country, England. In fact, she started representing England since the wake of her career. She was part of England’s squad that played in the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, helping the team to finish at fourth-place.
She also played in the 2009 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship in Belarus, helping England to win the trophy. She played in the 2010 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship in FYR Macedonia, in which England advanced to the finals that ended up in a defeat by France. Again in the same year, Lucy featured in two matches for England at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup held in Germany.
As she grew better, she was subsequently invited to join the U-23 England National Women’s team where she played in the Four Nations La Manga Tournament. She then joined the senior England squad making her debut for the senior team in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Russia in 2018 which she scored a lone goal. She also scored in the 2019 SheBelieves Cup against Japan. This was the opening goal in the match which ended 3-0 in favour of England. England eventually won the trophy.
Currently, Lucy is among the England squad playing in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in France.
