Gegard’s parents are an ethnic-Armenian couple. The family’s last name was previously Mofsesian before it was changed to Mousasi over a century ago when the family became Christians.
They lived in a village in Iran before heading to Tehran where they gave birth to Gegard. However, the family later suffered as a result of the Iran-Iraq war and they were forced to move from one refugee camp to another.
Subsequently, they moved to Leiden in the Netherlands where they continued with their lives and raise their three children.
With respect to their careers, Gegard’s father was a mechanic while his mother was a housewife.
