James Wiseman Biography

Born on March 31, 2001, in Nashville, Tennessee, Wiseman is only 17 years old. He is the youngest of two children born to Donzaleigh Artis; his older sister is called Jaquarius Greer. He fell in love with basketball at a very young age after he began watching phenomenal players like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant work magic on screen. He began playing and practicing at the age of 5.

He attended The Ensworth School for his freshman year of high school, where he played in all 30 games of the season, averaging 10.0 ppg., 2.0 bpg. and 6.0 rpg. He helped his team win a record 24-6 game and second place in the state tournament. The following year, Wiseman repeated the victories, once again helping Ensworth a semi-final finish and an 18-0 record. This time around, rising star averaged 20.1 ppg., 3.0 bpg. and 8.0 rpg. In the two years he stayed at the school, he stockpiled a total of 744 points, 116 blocked shots, and 348 rebounds.

Wiseman transferred to Memphis East after his second year in order to train with Penny Hardaway, who was an assistant coach at the school, and also the head coach of his AAU Team, Team Penny. He was ruled out from participating in the 2018/19 season because his relationship with Hardaway violated the “prior link” regulation for transfers. A month later, the ban was graciously lifted, and was allowed to partake in the season because the regulation was unclear as to how and when the “prior link” rule should apply. Wiseman went on to help the Memphis East Mustangs win their third consecutive state title with a 7-50 win against Whitehaven High School, amassing 19 points, 3 blocks, and 6 rebounds.

At the beginning of scouting season, high-ranking scouts from all over the country came to watch him play, by the time recruitment came to an end, he was unanimously regarded as the best player that the Class of 2019 had to offer. Although everyone wanted him, the high school star selected the University of Memphis out of all the schools that offered him scholarships to come to play for them, announcing that he would be going there to begin his college career. Basketball lovers and NBA junkies alike cannot wait to see if he lives up to the hype or fails to meet people’s expectations of him, after all to whom much is given, much is required in return.
