The Ugandan MMA fighter, David Onama, also called “Silent Assassin”, grew up loving compact sports. The 30-year-old is UFC’s first Ugandan-born fighter to win in the UFC. Although he keeps details about his family extremely private, he once shared a photo of his sister and brother on Instagram.
During his amateur career, he was the KCFA featherweight champion. His MMA career is currently 10-2-0.
David Onama’s Biography
David Onama was born in Kyangwali, Uganda on June 7, 1994. While the exact number of his siblings is yet to be ascertained, the fighter has shared a photo of himself with his younger sister and brother.
While growing up, David was very competitive and engaged in several combat sports. He revealed his dream was to be in the UFC and by the time he advanced in age, he started training in 2013.
David Onama Made His Professional MMA Debut in 2019
On February 23, 2019, the Ugandan-born fighter debuted against Francisco Pinto. He won the fight against Pinto, who had a 2-0-0 MMA record at that time. On October 23, 2021, he made his debut in the UFC against Mason Jones, fighting on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night: Costa vs. Vettori. He lost to Jones by decision in the third round.
Despite losing the bout, Onama revealed he felt like he won. This was because he enjoyed getting a chance to battle the best at the highest level of the game. He also added that the feedback he got from his fans, family, and friends made him feel good.
Following his debut, he went on to fight four times in the UFC. Making history as the first fighter from Uganda to make it to the UFC, David Onama also became the first fighter from Uganda to win in the promotion after his bout with Gabriel Benitez. Besides winning, he also got a $50k bonus. The victory improved Onama’s professional MMA record to 9 wins and 1 loss.
One of his most recent wins came against Garrett Armfield at UFC Fight Night on July 9, 2022, in which he beat Garrett by submission in the second round.
Although he has had a couple of wins, he has also lost some. He lost his fight against Nate Landwehr at UFC Fight Night on August 13, 2022. Both fighters earned a post-fight bonus after the bout and they were also awarded Fight of the Night.
According to reports, in the early part of 2022, David Onama was one of the fastest-rising stars in the UFC.
