The comely and ever-smiling Mohamed Elyounoussi is a Moroccan born professional footballer who flies the Norwegian flag and plays with Southampton. His family migrated to Norway from Morocco when he was still a very young child.
Although by virtue of his Moroccan origin and Norwegian settlement he is eligible to represent either country in football, he declined to play for Morocco after they fired the coach who had called him to play initially and instead, chose to play for Norway.
Mohamed Elyounoussi Biography
Mohammed Elyounoussi was born on the 4th of August 1994 in Al Hoceima in the northern part of Morocco and moved with his family to Norway when he was two years old and began playing senior football at 15. He attended high school in Norway and helped his father run a pizza restaurant there before going into football professionally.
He has three younger siblings including a younger brother Anwar Elyounoussi who plays as a forward for Norwegian club Fram Larvik and two cousins Tarik and Ridouan Elyounoussi football players for AIK and Krakeroy respectively. His older cousin Tarik was the motivation to go into football, Elyounoussi says. Before then his family seldom watched or followed the sport.
Mohamed Elyounoussi revealed in an interview with Southampton Football club that for his family, the road to success was to take education seriously, graduate top and get a high paying job, this changed for the young player when he learned that the game of football could be quite a lucrative venture plus it was healthy too.
Making his debut as a sub for the Sarpsborg 08 club at the age of 16 in Tippeligean at a match versus Odd Grenland on the 8th of May 2011, Elyounoussi has since moved around several teams making outstanding performances and now more recently signing in a five-year contract with Southampton where he plays as a forward winger.
At Sarpsborg he made 28 appearances and scored 6 goals from the 1st of January 2013 to 1st of March 2014. Moving on to Molde from that time till the 1st of July 2016 where he made 71 appearances in all, 64 of which were league and scored 33 goals across this time. Next, he went on to Swiss team Basel and remained there until the 29th of June 2018 after scoring 23 goals in 65 appearances. He was signed by Southampton for a reported fee of £16 million on 29 June 2018.
Elyounoussi later joined Celtic on loan on 30 August 2019, until the end of the season.
International Career
The young Moroccan player has featured for the Norway national team at different levels since 2011 when he first played in the country’s colors for the under-17 team. In 2012, he got the chance to play for both the Norway under-18 and under-19 teams.
From 2013 to 2016, he wore the under-19 colors of Norway, appearing in 19 games and scoring 5 goals in the process. He got the call to join the senior national team of the country in 2014 and has since then appeared in 22 games scoring 5 goals.
