He has one brother called Felipe. There is not a lot of information available on his early life, neither is it known how he came to be in Texas during his teenage years when he attended Coppell High School in Texas.
Prior to his move to America, Marcelo Huertas had started to play the game professionally, as he was a youth player for E.C Pinheiros. This is a multi-sports club which is based in Sao Paulo, Huertas’ birthplace. Then when he moved to Texas, he continued to play the sport but only at the high school level. He graduated from Coppell in 2000 and he moved back to Brazil. His relocation coincided with his debut in the senior men’s Sao Paulo national team, he played with the team for a year before he returned to E.C Pinheiros and joined their senior team as well. With Pinheiros he was able to play competitively at a national level, after playing for the Pinherios team for a year Marcelo Huertas went back to FMU Sao Paulo, the first team he played with when he returned to Brazil.
In 2004, Huertas decided to start playing for teams in Europe and the first club he was signed to was DKV Joventut which was based in Spain. With Juventus, he played for three years and by 2007 he was with Bilbao Basket, another Spanish club. He played for two more Spanish clubs and one Italian club before leaving Europe to America.
His debut in an NBA team was in 2015 when he was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers, with the Lakers he was able to get 10 points and provide 9 assists. These stats were released in March of 2016, showing how well he played in his first season with the Lakers and he was one of the few people to achieve that in that season. He played for the Lakers for two years before returning to Spain, where he currently plays for Canarias.
