Lee Haney’s Biography
Lee Haney was born on the 11th of November, 1959 in Fairburn, Georgia but his childhood was spent in South Carolina particularly in Spartenburg. Haney was raised to be a Christian, a way of life he still practices to date.
His fascination with bodybuilding can be traced to the stories he read of Samson in the bible and Hercules of Greek Mythology. As he grew older and had access to more reading material like magazines he learned of Robby Robinson, a man who was a star in bodybuilding circles and someone that Haney looked up to.
It was not until he was twelve that he had his first encounter with weights, this happened after he had told his parents that the Christmas gift he wanted that year was a pair of weights. The weights came with a Charles Atlas guide on Body Building. Atlas is can be described as the progenitor of the bodybuilding method that is practiced even in recent times. Armed with the weights and the Atlas guide, Haney’s bodybuilding took off.
His Bodybuilding Career
When he needed to use heavier weights, Haney signed up at the YMCA in the area he lived, while there he was taken under the wings of a gym instructor who gave him more tips on how to maximize his work out and get the best out of his routines. This gym instructor is a called Danny Rogers, Rogers could tell that Lee had a knack for bodybuilding as well as the genes necessary to have a successful career as a bodybuilder, and in no short time he signed him up for competitions.
Lee Haney has gone on to win multiple competitions, since his first attempt in participating in a competition when he was sixteen. But his first major win was in 1979 when he won his first competition, Teen Mr. America.
Haney found a way to navigate his passion with his education and he was able to graduate with a degree in Youth Counseling from the Spartanburg Methodist College. When he started to get noticed, scouts from different sports sought him out and he was only willing to play football which he was brilliant at. He had a career playing college football, which came with a sports scholarship and that is what put him through school.
Lee Haney has made an indelible mark in the bodybuilding world and is remembered as one of the greatest to ever do it. In the course of his career, the then-President Bill Clinton appointed him to head the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, a position he held for the entirety of Clinton’s presidency.
Between 1984 and 1991 he won the title of Mr. Olympia back to back, making his a record holder of most wins and most consecutive wins.
