Johnny Dawkins is famous for his active participation in basketball for decades. Johnny Dawkins Biography
On September 28, 1963, he was born Johnny Earl Dawkins Jr. in Washington, D.C. At the Mackin Catholic High School, Dawkins embraced basketball and would play hard at every given opportunity.
Dawkins went to Duke University where he continued to play the game and became the team’s all-time leading scorer with 2,556 points until J. J. Redick outranked it in 2006 with 2,557 points and later finished with 2,769 points.
Career
His NBA career started just after college in 1986 when he was picked the 10th overall in round 1 of the NBA draft. His playing position was of a point guard/shooting guard. He played for 9 seasons for San Antonio Spurs (1986-1989), Philadelphia 76ers (1989-1994), and Detroit Pistons (1994-1995). in his NBA career, he averaged 11.1 points, 5.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds.
Throughout his life history as a basketball player, Dawkins has been decorated with several victories and awards including Third-team Parade All-American in 1982 and1983; 1984 Second-team All-ACC, 1985 and 1986 First-Team All-American; and 1986 Naismith Player of the Year.
Having created a name at the NBA, Dawkins proceeded to Duke University in 1996 where he began as an administrative intern in the department of athletics, as well as took part in the Duke’s home basketball games as an analyst. In 1998, he became an assistant coach. He began to work as an associate head coach in charge of player development in the same university aforementioned in 1999.
His line of work changed when he was saddled with the responsibility of becoming a head coach in 2008 at Stanford and lasted until 2012. For the 8 seasons he was at Stanford, he became widely known and was nicknamed the king of the NIT. Under his coaching, the basketball team became a two-time NIT champion in 2012 and 2015. In 2016, he joined the University of Central Florida where he still heads as a coach. His coaching record has been remarkable as he helped the UCF team reach the NIT Semifinals in the 2016-2017 season; and NCAA Division 1 Round of 32 in the 2019-2020 season.
