In 1993, their 2-year old son, Gunnar was rushed to the hospital as he had difficulty breathing. After a series of treatments and tests, he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis which he reportedly tested negative to at birth. (Cystic Fibrosis is a disease where the body produces thick, sticky mucus that can clog the lungs). Cheryl alongside her husband went all out to get Gunnar the best of treatment even though there is no known cure. Eventually, they created the Boomer Esiason Foundation in 1993 to help raise awareness about the disease.
Their main goal is to fund research aimed at finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. They also provide scholarships, hospital grants, transplant grants, education, and awareness of cystic fibrosis to help provide a higher quality of life for people with CF. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $115 million which has been spent judiciously on its cause.

Jerry Cahill in collaboration with The Boomers Foundation in 2020, created ‘Bike 2 Breathe’ which is an activity to help create awareness about Cystic Fibrosis and encourage those living with it to inculcate exercising as a means to further clear their airway and enhance treatment.
The kick-off of the bike ride was held on the 15th of September 2020 with Jerry Cahill and Kerry. The kick-off was at Boston MA and the endpoint was at Pittsburgh PA on the 25th of September. This activity was held again in June 2021 with Jerry and Em.
Apart from this, John Pirozzi a representative of Chelsea Financial Services participated in the TCS New York City Marathon to raise money for Cystic fibrosis and particularly in support of the Boomer Esiason Foundation. There have been numerous supports from organizations and individuals towards the cause of the foundation.
