Hanna Gabriels is a Costa Rica female boxer whose career has been highlighted by 20 wins in 23 fights. Regarded as the world’s third-best active light middleweight, she has a number of titles to her name including the WBO welterweight title. The respected boxer was raised in a family of sportsmen and although she has come to make a name for herself in the sporting scene, she also doubles as a humanitarian, among other things.

Although she has come to be famous as Hanna Gabriels it was as Hanna Gabriel Valle that the boxer was born in her home country of Costa Rica on the 14th of January 1983. She was raised alongside a brother, Windell Gabriels by their parents; Yolanda Valle Moreno and Lesslie Gabriel Binns.
While there is no information about her childhood and education, it is known that since she was a little child, Hanna had always had an interest in making it as an elite athlete and if possible, she wanted to become an Olympic or even world champion.
Initially, the celebrated boxer had no interest in boxing; she was into track-and-field, but because of her weight which she wanted to shed, she took to boxing. She found joy in it and that opened the doors for her to achieve the dreams she once had as a little girl.
She is from an athletic family
Popular as La Amazona Black, Hanna was born into a family of sports enthusiast. She decided to follow the path of her father who was a boxer with so many prospects in his best days. Ahead of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Lesslie Gabriel Binns fought his way into qualifying but was unable to attend.
Apart from her father, her brother also had a foot in the sporting world. Instead of following the same path as his father and sister, Windel decided on becoming a professional footballer. He started his senior playing career in 2004 with Alajuelense and played for different clubs until he retired in 2013 with La U Universitarios. Windell also had a short spell with the Costa Rica national team in 2007, playing only 5 games.

1. Hanna did not start with an amateur career
Unlike many other boxers who rose through the ranks from amateur careers, Gabriels rose into becoming one of Costa Rica’s biggest boxers without having a career as an amateur. She only had a fight as an amateur before she made her senior debut in 2007.
However, that did not stop her from being undefeated in her first 14 fights, losing the 15th and drawing the 5th. Thus far, she has had 23 fights to her name and only lost two while one ended in a draw.
2. She is a humanitarian
The beautiful boxer is known to be concerned about the well being of others as well as animals and has supported social causes related to the promotion of health, women’s empowerment, prevention of gender-based violence and the response to the situation of refugees and asylum seekers in Costa Rica.
After winning a fight on July 17th of 2019, Hanna dedicated her world championship defence fight to refugees in Costa Rica. She also sent a message for the inclusion of and non-discrimination of refugees. She also went ahead to visit local communities along the northern border of the country to see for herself and better understand the needs of the Nicaraguan refugees and asylum-seekers.
While visiting, she also opened a sports festival in the border community of Los Chiles with a message against Xenophobia. She went as far as having a meeting with the president of Costa Rica to discuss the opportunities for the event. She was also appointed High Commissioner for Refugees by the United Nations.

The beautiful and talented boxer has held the title for WBA female light middleweight title since 2016, the WBA Welterweight title in 2009 and the WBA light middleweight title twice between 2010 and 2018.

Hanna revealed that at the tender age of five she was sexually abused and this experience as one can imagine was not a pleasant one for her and her family. This pushed her to advocate for women in an attempt to stop gender-based violence and abuse.
5. Hanna Gabriels is married with a daughter
Hannah is married to a fellow boxer by the name Tiquito Bryan Vasquez. The details of how they met and how long they have been married are yet to be known since she keeps her family life private. The couple is blessed with a daughter named Mia. Mia was born at 39 weeks via caesarean section in February 2014.
