Ryu So-Yeon was born on 29 June 1990 in South Korea to her parents, Chang Ryu and Kwang Ja Cho. Her father Chang Ryu owns a golf simulation business in South Korea. She was raised in Seoul, South Korea with her only sister, Somyung.
After attending elementary school, she enrolled at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. At the college, she tried to balance her studies and a professional golf career. She was competing for full-time on the LPGA Tour.

So Yeon Ryu’s Professional Golf Career
Ryu decided to focus on the game of golf in the second grade as part of her school’s extracurricular activities. As an amateur, she was a member of the Korean National Golf Team from 2005-2007.
Ryu won a gold medal for Korea in both individual and team events during the 2006 Asian games that were played in Doha, Qatar.
In 2007, Ryu turned professional at the age of 17. She had her first win as a professional in February 2008 on the American cactus tour. She won the tour by six strokes.
Ryu joined the LPGA of Korea after she won the first event she played at the Sports Seoul Open. She also made another win in July 2011 at the U.S. Women’s Open.
So Yeon Ryu made another major win in her career at the ANA Inspiration with a sudden-death playoff victory over Lexi Thompson.
She became the number one golfer in the women’s world golf rankings on 25 June 2017 after she won the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
