It was on November 4, 1955, that the sportscaster was born Stephen Ray Mariucci in Iron Mountain, Michigan. This is also where he was brought up by his parents, Ray Mariucci and Dee Mariucci. While his mother once worked as a dental assistant before working with various business establishments, his father worked as a coach and a teacher. He had a wrestling and boxing background.
As regards his education, Steve went to Iron Mountain High. While he was here, the athletics of Mariucci showed as he was on the school’s football, basketball, and track teams. From here, he went to Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette. Here, he played football and was an All-America (Division II) quarterback three times.
One would think that he would go on to play, but he decided, instead, to return to his alma mater where he coached from 1978 to 79 and then in 1980, he moved to Cal State Fullerton where he spent two years. Here is his career path the years that followed before going to the NFL:
- Louisville Wide receivers coach:1983–1984

- USC Wide receivers coach & special teams coach: 1986
- California Wide receivers coach & special teams coach: 1987–1989
- California Offensive coordinator: 1990–1991
- Green Bay Packers Quarterbacks coach: 1992–1995
- California (1996) Head coach
Although he had already had experience in the NFL as Golden Bears’ offensive coordinator, he was not made head coach until 1997 when he was hired by San Francisco 49ers. He remained with the team until the end of the 2002 season.
Next, he moved to Detroit Lions where he would spend two seasons before he was fired after 11 games into the 2005 season. He was sacked after he led the Lions to a 4-7 overall record.
Since he left the Lions, Mariucci is yet to take on any coaching job. Instead, he decides to take on a job with NFL Network where he works on their shows; NFL GameDay and NFL GameDay Morning.

Steve and Gayle Wood got married in July 1982. Tom was the best man at the wedding and although a day before the wedding he had an accident while playing softball that left his jaw broken, he still attended the ceremony. This is even after doctors warned him of flying after his jaw was wired.
Steve and Gayle are blessed with four children
Now married for 42 years, Steve and Gayle have four children between them; Tyler Mariucci, Brielle Mariucci, Adam Mariucci, Stephen Mariucci.
