Amandine Henry’s football skills are so much appreciated even by the various coaches who have described her as one of the world’s best defensive midfielders. She plays as a defensive midfielder for the French club Lille OSC and the France national team. She was the captain of the national team from 2017 to 2020.
Having started playing at the age of 5, she played with boys until she was 13 years old.
Amandine Henry’s Early Life and Background
Amandine was given birth in the city of Lille in France on 28th September 1989. She started playing football with the boy’s team from age 5 till 13 as no female teams were available then.
Her youth career saw her play with OSM Lomme (1995- 2000) and Iris Club de Lambersart (2000- 2004). Henry’s professional career began at the Football Club Féminin Hénin-Beaumont where she played for just one season, at age 15. The next year, she moved to the CNFE Clairefontaine academy for a two-season-long intensive training.
After this, she moved to the Olympique Lyonnais Féminin (Lyon) in 2007 and stayed till 2016. (Lyon is, without doubt, the Division 1 Féminin’s most successful club to date). 18-year-old Amandine suffered a knee cartilage injury which made her pause playing for about one and half years and almost drop out entirely. Her family however remained unflinching in their support and she returned to Lyon. From 2010- 2012, Henry played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final game as a defensive midfielder for Lyon.
During Chantal’s stay with Lyon, they won the Division 1 Féminine 9 consecutive seasons (2007- 2008 to 2015- 2016), the Coupe de France Féminine 6 times (2007- 2008, 2011- 2012, 2013- 2016 seasons), and the UEFA Women’s Champions League four times (2010- 2011, 2011- 2012, 2015- 2016 & 2017- 2018).
The American professional women’s soccer team, Portland Thorns FC, was next in line for Amandine after a highly successful period with the Lyons. She joined the team in June 2016 and played 8 matches before sustaining another injury in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. After undergoing corrective surgery, the football player signed up with PSG in 2017 January. Two months later, she moved back to Portland Thorns.
The French player was a key Thorns player in the 2017 season of the NWSL. She scored several goals in favor of the club against Boston (27th May), Kansas City (16th August), Houston Dash, Orlando Pride, and North Carolina (in the Championship on 14th October). Portland Thorns FC won the League making her an NWSL champion. They previously won a shield in the 2016 NWSL.
Chantal moved back to her former team, Olympique Lyons, for the 2018 season. The player attests that this might be a permanent move for her as Lyons has all to offer including first-class facilities, the best players, and the support of its amazing president.
Amandine has also played on all levels of her national football team. From 2004- 2005, she served on the France U17 team and the France U19 in 2006- 2007. She also made 5 appearances on the France U20 team and in 2009 moved to the main team remaining there to date. France clinched the Cyprus Cup in 2014 and the SheBelieves Cup in 2017.
Henry was awarded the Silver Ball in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and was part of the All-Star Team in the same event. She was also one of three female midfielders named as the 2015 FIFPro Women’s World XI award winners.
Meet Her Family Members
Her passion for football stemmed from her family. Her dad was a good amateur football player and her cousin was also a member of the training academy at Lille. Also living in the vicinity of a stadium made it easy for her to keep up with Lille’s matches.

Amandine Henry’s Salary and Net Worth
Amandine Henry has been listed as one of the world’s top ten highest-paid female football players. Female players notably earn much less than their male counterparts. It is hoped that this will change shortly. In 2016, she was said to earn about $70,000.
Her move from Portland to Lyon this season was said to be because Lyon offered more than the $315,000 salary cap imposed on Portland by NWSL. Hopefully, she now earns a lot more with Lyons.
