Eugénie Le Sommer is a renowned French footballer who currently plays in the French Division 1 Feminine for Olympic Lyon, as well as in France women’s national team. She plays in a creative position as an attacking midfielder, but she usually adopts the second striker position while playing for her country.

Her brilliant and electrifying performances on the pitch have established her as one of the most talented football players to come out of France in recent times. Eugénie’s performance during the 2008 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup earned her the Bronze Ball.

Eugénie Le Sommer Biography 

Whether she is playing for club or country, Eugénie is considered a powerful goal machine. Her sharp instincts and an exceptional sense of positioning leave defenders shaking in their boots. Her tenacity and goal-scoring abilities have set her on the path to becoming France’s highest goal scorer, be it male or female, as soon as she crosses the 81 goals mark.

The accomplished football player was born Eugénie Anne Claudine Le Sommer on May 18, 1989, in Grasse, France. She began playing football when she was five years old when she joined the women’s team at Trelissac FC. She spent four years there before moving on to AS Guermeur, then on to one of the major clubs in the Brittany region, FC Lorient, where she received numerous honors and recognition for leading her youth team to win the 2005 Coupe Federale 16 and the 2006 Mozaic Foot Challenge at the Clairefontaine academy. Eugénie was offered a place at the CNFE Clairefontaine academy, which she accepted. She stayed there for a while before joining Stade Briochin in the Division 1 Feminine. She played all 22 games in her debut season and netted four goals.

The following season she scored 10 goals in 22 appearances and earned a nomination for UNFP Female Player of the Year. In the 2009-10 season, she put down 10 goals in her first 11 appearances and ended the season as the highest goal scorer in the league for which she received the UNFP Female Player of the Year award. She joined Olympic Lyon in 2010, leading the club to successive title wins with 163 goals in 175 appearances.

Soccer Career 

Eugénie Le Sommer has represented France at the women’s under-17, under-19, and under-20 national level. As part of the under-19 team, she played in the 2007 and 2008 La Manga Cup, as well as the 2007 and 2008 UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship. Although the tournaments were held in France, they only managed to make it out of the group stage and reached the semi-finals both times. She was also a part of the French team at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2008, which took place in Chile. Eugénie scored a total of four goals in the tournament, including a brace against Argentina, an equalizer against Nigeria in the knockout round which resulted in a 3-2 victory for France, and another against North Korea. She won the Bronze Ball for being the third-best player in the competition.

In February 2009, Le Sommer made her senior debut in a game against the Republic of Ireland, ending 2-0 with a win for France. She went on to play in other competitions including a tournament in Cyprus where she scored two goals in four games. She was picked by Coach Bruno Bini to join the 2009 UEFA Women’s Euro team, going on to play all four matches with one goal in the quarterfinals match against the Netherlands, which France lost 4-5 after penalty shootouts. Eugénie recorded her third international goal during the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification match against Serbia on September 23, 2009.

The football star has also represented France at the Summer Olympics in 2012 where she scored one goal against Japan in their 2-1 semi-final loss, as well as the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in which she scored the opening goal against England in a 1-0 victory and a brace against South Korea to claim a 3-0 quarterfinal victory for France. She was also part of France’s 2016 Olympics campaign, putting up two group stage goals against New Zealand and Columbia. Eugénie Le Sommer is also representing France in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The footballer is currently married to Florina Dariel. The pair dated for 13 years before they got married on August 11, 2020, two days after she won the Coupe the France final.
