Gabi Rennie is not necessarily the biggest name in football right now, but she is gradually making her mark. She plays as a forward for the Indiana Hoosiers as well as for the New Zealand national team after making her debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she netted a goal for her country. 1. She was born and brought up in New Zealand
It was as Gabrielle Rose Rennie that the footballer was born on 7 July 2001 in her home country of New Zealand, in the town of Christchurch, which is also where she was raised. She fell in love with football as a little girl, and since then, she has continued to play before moving to the US for her studies.
2. Rennie has an amazing and supportive family
The forward was raised in an average-sized family together with her siblings. She is very close to her mum Rachel Rennie and her dad, Gary Rennie is one of her strongest fans. In fact, when she first started playing at the age of 5, Gary became her first coach.
The footballer also has two siblings Liam Rennie and Lachlan Rennie who, she said, contributed to her career. According to her, they were always there to drive her to different training and sometimes had to stay up late for her sake.
3. Gabi is well educated
As regards her education, she went to Rangiora High School where she played football and also became the school’s deputy head girl. From there, she moved to Indiana University, Bloomington where she is currently pursuing an Exercise and Science degree.
4. She is in a loving relationship
The beautiful Gabi Rennie is not single. She is in a loving relationship with her boyfriend Angus Fletcher whose pictures she always shares on social media. Angus and Gabi started dating in January 2017. In January 2019, the pair celebrated their second year together.
5. Her career has been good thus far
Gabi started her youth career with the Waimakariri United youth team in 2006. She played with the team until 2018. In 2020, she began her college career with Indiana Hoosiers with which she still plays. In between, she also started her senior career with Canterbury United Pride in 2018 and she played until 2020.
She got her first call to play for New Zealand at the Under-17 level in 2018. She helped the team to win a bronze medal at the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which was the first medal New Zealand would win in a FIFA competition.
6. The footballer also loves tennis and horseriding
While football is her first love and what has turned out to be her calling, Gabi also loves tennis and she rides horses, even though she doesn’t do either professionally. She might be quite good at the two sports, but not so much with golf. She once made a joke that golf is not her calling.
7. Her first goal with the Ferns senior team was at the Olympics
The striker recorded her first goal for her country at the senior level during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo when she scored in a 2 – 1 loss to Australia. She net in the team’s only goal with a superb header at the stoppage time of the game, to reduce the deficit.
While it was a disappointing game for New Zealand, it was a personal triumph for her, having scored her first goal at that level. More importantly, her brother Liam was in the stadium to watch it happen. He described the moment as one of the proudest moments of his life.
8. She missed her first opportunity with the Football Ferns
Before the Olympics, Gabi was previously invited to play for the team two years earlier, but on her first day in camp, she tore a ligament. This forced her out of the team and out of football for four months. Although it was a disappointment for her, she claimed it helped her to reevaluate where she was, and thanks to that, she is now in a better spot.
