Gregg Valentine Biography

Though he is widely known as Greg Valentine, his real name at birth is Jonathan Anthony Wisniski and he was born on September 20, 1951 at Seattle, Washington, United States.

Being the son of a renowned wrestler, Johnny Valentine, wrestling to Greg is more of a family affair and, by the time he was a teenager, he had toured all-round Texas all thanks to his father’s wrestling activities. Due to this, Greg later became convinced to join wrestling. With this determination, he decided to drop out of college to pursue that dream, defying his father’s advice to continue with his studies.

Consequently, he moved to Canada in the ’70s for his training; he actually trained under Stu Hart in Calgary.

Professional Wrestling Career

Popularly known by the ring name ‘The Hammer Valentine’ which he adopted in honor of his father and having being trained by Stu Hart, as well as under the Sheik, Greg stormed the wrestling battle rings and made his professional debut in July 1970 during the match against Angelo “King Kong” Mosca.

Later, Greg advanced into the Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in Carolinas and Virginias after being hired to replace his father who survived a life-threatening plane crash and suffered a broken back.

In the wake of these events, Greg formed a team with Ric Flair and this collaboration yielded positive results as they were able to win the NWA World tag team title on two occasions as well as the NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship in1977 after beating Gene and Ole Anderson on the 26th of December, 1976. However, later the duo separated after they lost their title in 1978. Following their split, Greg went further to become the NWA World Tag Team Champion along with Baron von Raschke in 1978.

Meanwhile, on June 11, 1977, Greg won the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship in Raleigh after breaking the ankle of Chief Wahoo McDaniel to claim the Heavyweight title. Greg became so proud of defeating McDaniel that he made a customized T-shirt in which the front carried an inscription I broke Wahoo’s leg and with another as No more Wahoo on the back.

Nevertheless, Greg then began working on a casual basis for the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). Again, in 1980, Greg won the NWA World Tag Team Championship along with Ray Stevens within the same year, and he also won the United States Championship twice in 1982 after defeating his long-time rival Wahoo.
However, in 1985 Greg initiated the Dream Team, along with Brutus Beefcake and was managed by Luscious Johnny V. Eventually, the team defeated the U.S. Express (Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo) to claim the WWF Tag Team Championship.

By 1992, Greg had joined the World Championship Wrestling (WCW ) where he teamed up with Terry Taylor, and with this new partnership, they were able to win the WCW United States Tag Team Championship, after defeating Ron Simmons and Big Josh. Subsequently, the duo worked hard to defend their belt until it was ousted out from them by The Freebirds at the WrestleWar 92 on May 17th of that year.

Progressively, Greg also featured in the 1993 Survivor Series; he actually came disguised as The Blue Knight, and on 1st July 1996 he also returned to the WCW where he faced Randy Savage in the WCW Monday Nitro, while he made many appearances in the WCW.

In1994, Greg took his wrestling campaign to the independent circuit, wrestling in Japan, and the Hamilton-based International Championship Wrestling promotion as well as the American Wrestling Federation, where he featured in several fights.

In a bid to acknowledge his powerful and immense contributions to wrestling, Greg was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2004 by his former manager Jimmy Hart on the 13th of March, 2004. He dedicated this achievement to his late father.

Greg again won the Canadian Grand-Prix Wrestling Championship held at Morrisburg in May 2007, after defeating Quinson Valentino. Once again Greg when on to revive the defunct Dream Team this time around it was with Brutus Beefcake, after which the duo featured in the JCW or Juggalo Championship Wrestling in 2007.

Greg was later inducted into the Legends Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame by Jack Blaze at West Virginia, during the annual LPW Over The Edge event held on January 29, 2011.

Additionally, away from the rings, Greg has made appearances in quite a number of movies and television shows, notable among them are: Hogan Knows Best, Insane Clown Posse, Something Fishy, as well as Legends of Wrestling II, Showdown, in addition to WWE Legends of WrestleMania, WWE 2K17, WWE 2K18, WWE 2K19, and lastly in The Dream Team.
