He was born on 25th August 1991 in Suonenjoki, Finland. The 34 year-old started playing ice hockey in his native Finland at the youth level with Liiga club, kalPa. He quickly developed into a multifaceted forward and was selected by the Florida Panthers in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as 184th overall.

Though the Finnish-born ice hockey player was selected by the Florida Panthers, he failed to reach an agreement with the club, instead, he continued playing with kalPa in Finland. He subsequently signed a two-year contract with HIFK as a free agent on 3rd May 2012.
For two seasons, Pakarinen impressed at HIFK, ending his second season (2013/14) with a career-high of 20 goals and 30 points. That put him on the Oilers’ radar.
So, at the end of his contract with HIFK he penned his first NHL deal as a free agent with Edmonton Oilers on a two-year entry-level deal on 16th June 2014.
Three years later, the Finnish native was placed on waivers by the NHL side on 1st December 2017. The following day, he was sent to the club’s AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors on 2nd December.
At the expiration of his deal with the Oilers, he left the club and NHL as a free agent and signed a one-year contract with the Russian side, Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL. He scored 19 goals and 26 points in 60 games during his stay at the club, before signing another one-year deal with Kazakhstan club, Barys Nur-Sultan on 2nd May 2019.
His stay at the Kazakhstan-based club was marred by injury and Covid-19 which led to the cancelation of the Playoffs. Though he managed to feature in 22 games and register 10 points.
The Finnish ice hockey star decides to return to his native Finland in 2020, where he signed a three-year contract with Jokerit of the KHL. His teammates across the clubs he has played for praised him for his strength and physicality.
