Marta Vieira da Silva was born in Dois Riachos in Alagoas, Brazil on 19 February, 1986. Her parents are Aldario and Tereza. Her father walked out on them when Marta was still a baby. Marta is currently 39 years old.

She grew up in a poor family together with her siblings including  Angela da Silva, Valdir da Silva, and José da Silva. She started playing football at an early age. She played street soccer without shoes alongside boys, but they soon started to shun her because she was better than they were.

Marta said she is a Catholic even though she does not go to church much.

1. Marta Came To Notice At The Age Of 14

She played soccer on the streets in a boys’ team before a female coach came across her. Helena Pacheco came across Marta when she was 14. She helped shape her career forward.

At the age of 15, she moved to Vasco Da Gama where she played for two years. When she turned 17, she became professional by transferring to Santa Cruz. Her time there helped her to develop herself towards joining Umea IK of Sweden.

She started her career at Vasco da Gama in 2000 after which she transferred to Santa Cruz. Marta later moved to Umea IK in Sweden aiding the club to reach the UEFA Cup final. She scored 22 goals for that season and 21 goals in the next season placing Umea on the Winning side.

The club’s winning streak ran till she left to join Los Angeles Sol for the next three years. She maintained a high number of goals for the club and was the top scorer for the 2009 season. She found the net ten times. Yet, the league lost to another Women Professional Soccer team, Sky Blue FC in a 1-0 match.

While the league was off-season, Marta signed a three-month loan with Santos. She was to contest in The Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil. She scored a goal in the first and two in the other contest for her club.

When Sol went under in 2010, FC Gold Pride signed the rights to Marta as a first pick. She scored 19 goals in the 24 games she appeared in. The club folded in 2010 making her a free agent.

In December of 2010, she returned to Santos on a two-month loan.

She joined the Western New York Flash covering the third year of her contract with Gold pride. She put in a lot of goals for the club.

Her return to Damallsvenskan in 2012 was due to the cancellation of the WPS season in 2012. She signed a two-year contract with Tyreso FF.

Marta’s payment of a whopping $400 000 per season came from external sponsors. She aided Tyreso to win the Damallsvenskan title for the first time.

Her move to Avaldnes IL after the collapse of Tyreso was to have financial cut-offs. Yet, she moved to Rosengard in 2014. She won the Damallsvenskan title in 2014 and 2015 while with FC Rosengard.

She joined her current club, Orlando Pride in a free transfer and finished second in her first season at Orlando. Her teammates voted her MVP. But, Orlando lost to Portland Thorns in the semi-finals in the season.

She has served the Brazilian national team FIFA Women World Cups and the Olympics.

3. Marta Vieira Da Silva Holds The Records For Highest Goals Scored

Marta is the highest goals scorer among males and females in and outside Brazil. She is set apart with 111 goals for Brazil and 17 goals in the FIFA World Cup tournament.

She is the first footballer in history to score at five world cup editions. Cristine Sinclaire matched this record in 2019.

So far she is the only footballer to score at five consecutive Olympics.

4. She is a Player of The Year For Six Times

From 2006 to 2020, Marta held the title of player of the year five consecutive times. In 2018, Marta still bagged the award.

The Brazilian-born player is at the top of her game and still pushing forward.

5. She Is A UN Goodwill Ambassador For Women And Girls

She is the face for women and girls in sport. As a recognized soccer star, her role is to influence the work of UN Women. The Un Women works towards gender equality and empowerment across the world.

From 2010 to 2018, she was the UN goodwill ambassador. Marta’s face is an encouragement to women and girls. It gives them the message of rising above stereotypes. They should work to overcome barriers that to their success.

6. Marta Is The Only Woman On The Maracana Sidewalk Of Fame

In 2018, she added her steps to those of her male counterparts. She is the only woman to put her footsteps on the sidewalk of the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Adding her footsteps to the sidewalk is an encouragement for other female players.
