1. Phil Heath was a college basketball star
While he was growing up, he fell in love with basketball, a sport that he would play at Rainier Beach High School. He also played as the shooting guard in his team in the university.
Heath is said to have scored just 86 points in his four-year career in college.
In 2002, he realized that basketball had not allowed him to develop as an individual, something that he craved. Because of this, he channeled his energy towards pursuing a career as a professional bodybuilder in October 2002.
2. Bodybuilding career
Only a year after he started out with a 185 lbs body, he dramatically transformed his body and competed at The Rocky Mountain NPC (National Physique Committee) USA Championship “Northern” in 2003 where he eventually won the overall title.
In 2004, he won the NPC Colorado State, Heavyweight title followed by the NPC Junior Nationals, HeavyWeight in 2005, the same year he won the NPC USA Championships, HeavyWeight.
In 2006, Phil Heath won the Colorado Pro Championships as well as the New York Pro Championship. Then in 2008, he won the IFBB Iron Man.
Although he had competed in previous Mr. Olympia, he won the first title in 2011 and would repeat the feat in the coming years until 2018 when he lost the title to Shawn Rhoden who won it for the first time.
After the defeat by Rhoden, Heath focused on coming back stronger and better. With intense workout sessions and a strict lesson plan he has continued to overcome little defeats which he calls minor bump to his road to greatness.
