The celebrity daughter was born Sultana Abdul-Jabbar in April 1979 in Los Angeles, California. She was born in the US to her parents, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Habiba Abdul-Jabbar. ‘Sultana’ is an Arabic name and the feminine form of Sultan. It means ‘strength, authority, or rulership’.
Raised as the youngest child of her parents’ three children; Kareem Jr. and Habiba. She also has two step-siblings Amir and Adam from her father’s other relationships.

1. Her Parents Met At A Lakers Game
Sultana’s parents first crossed each other’s path at a Lakers game when her father was in his senior year at the University of California, Los Angele (UCLA). They reportedly tied the nuptials on 28th May 1971.
2. She Is Of Yoruba Lineage
According to her father, his ancestors were the Yoruba people from present-day Nigeria. They were owned by a slave master named Alcindor, who was a French planter in the West Indies. So, that is where he got his surname ‘Alcindor’ before his conversion to Islam and adoption of a new name.
3. Her Grandparents Were Not Invited to Her Parents’ Wedding
Kareem’s parents didn’t come to his wedding because they never got the invitation. According to him, Hamaas advised him not to. In fact, there are reports that suggested that his parents were not allowed to come to the wedding because of their Christian beliefs. However, there is no confirmation that the assertion is true or not.
4. Her Father Converted to Islam and Adopted a New Name at 24
Sultana’s father converted to the Islamic religion when he was 24 years old in 1971. Before the conversion, his name was Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, but after converting, he became known as the ‘Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’. The name was given to him by Hamaas Abdul Khaalis, which means ‘noble one, servant of the Almighty.
According to him, he was introduced to the Islamic religion while he was a freshman at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). That was the early period of his awakening. The awakening started when he read “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” and saw how Malcolm X broke free from the racism that had imprisoned his mind.

5. Her Mother Was Formerly Known as Janice Brown
Before her mother married her father, she was bearing the name; Janice Brown. But, before the wedding, she changed her name to Habiba after voluntarily converting to Islam from Christianity. This conversion was because of her husband who she met while at college.
6. Sultana’s Parents Divorced In 1978
Kareem and Habiba’s marriage didn’t last for long. The union lasted for only seven years. And during that period, the couple were blessed with three children; Habiba born in 1972, Kareeem Jr. born in 1976, and Sultana born in 1979.
Moreso, some reports indicate that Sultana’s mother was three months pregnant with her when her father mentioned his intention to divorce her mother. Other reports say that she was born years after her parents had separated but continued to have kids. The divorce was said to have been officially finalized in 1983.
