Carlos Queiroz is no longer the head coach of the Egypt national team following the termination of his contract with the Egyptian FA (EFA). The decision came after a not-so-impressive performance of the Pharaohs at the final of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and the 2022 World Cup play-off qualifier against Senegal, losing on both occasions on penalties.
The Portuguese who previously coached Real Madrid, Portugal, Iran, and Colombia took charge of the Pharaohs in September 2021 as a replacement for Hossam El Badry.
In the meantime, Queiroz’s replacement is yet to be announced, but there are indications that former Egyptian player Hossam Hassan and Pyramids coach Ihab Gala are in contention for the job.

The former Real Madrid, Portugal, and Colombia coach was first appointed as head coach of the Egyptian national team on 8th September 2021. He took over from Hossam El Badry who managed the team from 2019 until he was substituted for the job in 2021.
Based on details from the EFA verified Twitter handle, Queiroz’s contract was terminated by a mutual agreement between the Football Association and the Portuguese. The head of the EFA, Professor Gamal Allah appreciated the effort put in by the former Iran coach, his assistant, and the entire staff.
On his part, the former Portuguese coach took this Twitter to show his gratitude to the staff, and the players for his time with them.
While it is not exactly clear when a new coach for the Pharaohs will be announced, EFA is reportedly meeting on Tuesday, 12th April 2022 to discuss the former coach’s potential replacement. Moreover, two names have popped out, Hossam Hassan and Ihab Gala.
Hossam Hassan is currently coaching Al Ittihad Alexandria and is a former Egyptian striker who remains the country’s all-time leading scorer with 83 goals in 176 appearances. While Ihab Gala is the manager of Pyramids and also a former Egyptian footballer.
