Mike Holmgren Biography
On the 15th of June in 1948, Lincoln and Barbara Holmgren welcomed to the world their child Michael George Holmgren. Michael George was born in San Francisco, California; this is where he spent his childhood and some of his life as an adult.
It is not known if he is the first child of his parents, but he has three siblings – two sisters and a brother. His sisters’ names are Calla and Barbara while his brother is called Jens. The family was a close-knit one. His parents were devout Christians and his mother was a teacher until her death in 2002 while his father was a real estate salesman.
Michael Holmgren attended Abraham Lincoln High school for his high school education and went ahead to Southern California University. While he was in university and in high school, he played football in the position of a quarterback, but he sustained a knee injury which made it difficult for him to actually lead a career in the game, hence ending the lifelong dream he had of playing the sport professionally.

Despite not being able to play the game, Michael Holmgren still found a way to become an integral part of the game and this he did by becoming a coach. His career as a coach began in 1971 in a high school, and not just any high school but his alma mater. But Mike Holmgren did not firstly sign up to be their coach; his primary job at the high school was that of the history teacher and he was just their Offensive Coordinator. A year after teaching at Lincoln High School, he moved to Sacred Heart High School where he had the same jobs of a teacher and Offensive Coordinator.
The last high school he taught and coached at was Oak Grove high school and then he moved on to San Francisco State University. Holmgren’s tenure as a coach at the college level was for a total of four years and he is credited with grooming some of the best players that got drafted into the NFL.
In all of the time that Mike Holmgren spent coaching high school and college football teams, he was never actually head coach of the team, he either served as the Offensive Coordinator or Quarterbacks coach. This continued even when he joined the major leagues in 1986 by becoming the Quarterback/ assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He worked with Bill Walsh who was the team’s head coach and also had the opportunity to work with some of the students he had coached when he worked at Brigham Young University; including Steve Young and Joe Montana.
Mike Holmgren became a head coach in 1992, when he moved to the Green Bay Packers, a position he held for six years, and this period is remarkable for the successes the team had. His next coaching job was at Seattle Seahawks and this was where he retired from after working for the team for eight years.
