The Phoenix Mercury star player, Sami Whitcomb, is married to a former professional basketball player, Kate Malpass. The couple has been together since 2014 and their union has produced two children. While Sami and her wife have been together for a good while, they have maintained a level of privacy that has left basketball fans curious about Sami’s partner. Here are the things to know about her, from her background to her career and love life with Sami.
Sami Whitcomb’s Wife Is a Noongar from Perth, Western Australia
Sami Whitcomb’s wife, Kate Malpass, was born on July 26, 1988. She was born and raised in Perth, Australia, where she has lived most of her life. An Aboriginal Australian of Noongar heritage, Malpass’ people are said to be traditional landowners of the area surrounding Perth in Western Australia.
Growing up, Kate Malpass fell in love with sports, but she was told that she wouldn’t be able to pursue a professional sporting career due to a condition affecting one of her arms, which the doctors said would never regain full strength. Despite the odds, Malpass excelled in multiple sports at school.
By the time she turned 13, she had gotten so good that she made it to the under-16 National Championships for basketball. She played for two national championship basketball teams, captaining the Perth Lynx team to victory. Kate Malpass went on to have a successful career in the WSBL. She mostly played for the Willetton Tigers, which she also captained for several years, to become a six-time Willetton WSBL MVP and a four-time WSBL all-star.
Kate Is a Physiotherapist and a Teacher
Kate Malpass’ basketball days are over, but she’s been building a career in physiotherapy and education. From 2006 to 2011, she attended Curtin University in Perth, where she bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in physiotherapy. Years later, she obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education Health (Physical Education/Fitness). This was in 2015, from the University of Western Australia.
Sami Whitcomb’s wife worked as a physiotherapist with Kieser Australia and Richmond Football in the first half of the 2010s. After obtaining her Postgraduate Diploma, she became a health and physical education teacher at Perth College in 2016. Kate Malpass took on a similar role at Penrhos College in the early 2020s, and according to her LinkedIn profile, she’s been a health and physical education teacher at Christ Church Grammar School in Claremont, Western Australia, since 2020.
Sami and Kate Met In 2014 and Married In 2017
Sami Whitcomb and Kate Malpass’ love story is a stroke of fate that has seen Whitcomb, who’s originally from Ventura, California, become a naturalized Australian playing for the country’s women’s national basketball team, the Australian Opals. Sami met Kate after her basketball team in Germany, the Wolfenbuttel Wildcats, went bankrupt in 2013, compelling her to move to Australia to play in the State Basketball League (SBL).
While Sami moved to Australia for her career, she found the love of her life and didn’t waste time starting a family with her. The couple got married in the United States sometime in 2017. Theirs has been a happy union blessed with two sons. Kate Malpass gave birth to their first son, Nash Whitcomb, in late 2020. He has a younger brother named Reef Augie Whitcomb, who was born in 2023.
