Abbie McManus was born Abbie Mary McManus on the 14th day of January in the year 1993. The footballer was born in Prestwich, a suburban town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England.
Not much is known about Abbie’s parents but we know that she grew up alongside her brother Scott McManus who is also a professional football player. As kids, she and Scott played football together and often went to training together.
Her passion for football led her to join the boy’s football team while in elementary school. She did very well and tried showing strength against the boys. While at this, her passion for the sport developed.
Abbie McManus Professional Football Career
After training with her brother in the boy’s team, Abbie started her football career with the Bury Girls in her youth days and she was named then as the Under-16s most improved player of 2008. Later Abbie became a Manchester city player in 2009, while in City, she played in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division which City later won. The win gave the club the ticket for the National Division in the 2011–12 season.
Her stay with City was quite a long one as she spent 7 years with the club making a total of 69 appearances with 6 goals. Abbie later went on transfer to Sheffield Ladies in 2013, despite the fact that her stay with the club was brief, lasting only for one season, she was able to help Sheffield to win the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division in the 2013–14 season after appearing in 13 matches and even scoring a lone goal for the club despite playing as a defender.
Consequently, Abbie returned to Manchester City for the 2014 season when she made her top division debut for the club playing against Everton during the 2014 WSL Cup. City eventually won the Cup after beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final playoffs. Abbie featured in the 2015–16 FA Women’s Cup though her club pulled out of the tournament in the semi-finals thanks to Chelsea who eliminated them.
During the 2016 FA WSL season, Abbie suffered an ankle injury in August that kept her away for the rest of the season. However, in December that year, she renewed her contract with City. She became fit and was able to play in the 2017 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Eventually, by May 17, 2019 Abbie took the decision to change base thereby leaving Manchester City after being with them for over 10 years. She then signed a deal with Manchester United were she currently plays.
International Career
On the international scene, it wasn’t until in 2018 that Abbie was invited to join the England Senior team to replace Steph Houghton who was away on injury which she sustained at the 2018 SheBelieve Cup.
Abbie won her first senior cap in the opening match of the 2019 SheBelieves Cup against France. England won the game 4-1 and eventually won the trophy. Abbie continued to maintain her position in the team throughout the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification games and in the main competition taking place in France.
Personal Life, Single, Dating Boyfriend
Abbie has always acknowledged her brother Scott as one of her biggest inspirations from the inception of her career. Scott is also a footballer who played for a non-league club Coalville Town Her parents have also been supportive of her. It is noteworthy that Abbie had worked with Manchester City as a kit woman before she became a professional player in the club.
Abbie is openly gay and has been in a relationship with Holly Lam-Moores since 2017. Holly is also a sportswoman who played handball in the 2012 Olympic Women’s Handball team that represented Great Britain.
