With hard work, doggedness and constant training, the Russian professional boxer, Alexander Povetkin has become what true sports stars are made of. He has risen through the ranks to win several prestigious titles first as an amateur and in his professional boxing career suffering just two losses. He was born Alexander Vladimirovich Povetkin in Kursk, Russian SFSR, the Soviet Union on the 2nd of September, 1979. He grew up very active and interested in sports. He began his amateur career in kickboxing and won a ‘World Junior Championship’ in September 1997 then came first for the Baltic countries cup in 1998. In 1999, he won another World title and a European professional kickboxing title in the year 2000.
In the same year at age 21, he won his major boxing tournament (Russian Championships) which heralded several winnings at various amateur tournaments. After winning an Olympic Gold in 2004, he finished his amateur career with an impressive 125- 7 record avenging all losses.
He took a year off before deciding to turn pro. His first contract as a professional was with Sauerland Events which allowed him to train in Russia and fight out of Germany. He made his debut in Germany on the 11th of June 2005 where he defeated Muhammad Ali Durmaz in the second-round TKO.
At the end of 2006, he had a sterling record of ten wins in ten fights. One of the wins that established him as a heavyweight contender was a win against Larry Donald in 2007. The fight went on to the ten rounds full distance and was a solid win for Alexander.
In his professional boxing career, he has had 35 wins with 24 wins by knockout and 11 wins by decision. The 2 losses he suffered are Anthony Joshua by knockout and Wladimir Klitschko by decision.
