Anthony Barry is an English football coach whose managing career has landed him the position of interim Chelsea manager in 2022. He is also a former football midfielder with a career that started in 2004 and ended in 2017 after playing for teams such as Coventry City, Chester City, and Wrexham among others. 

Barry may not necessarily fall under the much-exalted names in football but with a close look into his career in the sport, he is definitely a force to reckon with. As a manager whose work led him to Chelsea in 2020 and Belgium in 2022, he has been able to win the UEFA Champions League title as an assistant manager. He also won no fewer than 4 titles in his playing career.

1. Early Life and Youth Career of the Football Coach

Anthony Barry was born on 29 May 1986 in Liverpool, a city and metropolitan in Merseyside, England.

He lived his early life away from the world’s attention until he was 18 in 2004 when he signed for the youth team of the English Club, Everton. At the time, he served as a trainee for a few months before making a move to his senior team that lasted about 9 years.

2. Anthony Barry Played For 6 Teams in His Senior Career and Appeared in About 300 Matches

Throughout Anthony’s career, he played about 300 matches with 1 youth club, Everton; and 6 teams in his senior career.

Barry started his senior career as a player with Coventry City in 2004 and in 2005, he moved to Accrington Stanley where he played about 26 matches in a season.

On a free transfer, he moved to another professional football club, Yeovil Town where he played in the 2008/2009 season. From there, he played for several other clubs before heading to Wrexham where he retired in 2017 after suffering from an injury.

3. He Became the Youngest First Team Coach in England

After suffering a dislocated patella that forced Anthony Barry to retire, he looked in the direction of coaching, and at 30 in 2017, he coached his first team, Wigan. This would turn him into the youngest first-team coach in England.

With the team, he coached the likes of English defenders Reece James and Dujon Sterling.

His stay with the team, under head coach Paul Cook, lasted 3 years and 2 months before he headed to Chelsea Football Club in 2020 as an assistant head coach.

4. Coach and Former English Footballer Frank Lampard Gave Him the Opportunity to Join Chelsea

He spent about 2 years with Frank Lampard while studying for UEFA Pro License. At the time, the men built a relationship. Subsequently, Lampard who started his career with Chelsea in 2019 called Barry and allowed him to join Chelsea in 2020.

According to Barry, he’ll always be grateful to Lampard for the opportunity.

Perhaps, one of his ways of showing gratitude was contributing to the team’s success and helping it win the UEFA 2020 Champions League.

Away from the glory that he may have brought to Chelsea, he has also contributed to other teams. He has taken on part-time coaching roles with Ireland and Belgium.

6. Anthony Barry Developed a Very Close Relationship With Thomas Tuchel Before He Was Made an Interim Coach

After Frank Lampard was dismissed from Chelsea in 2021 for poor performance, Anthony was then encouraged by Thomas Tuchel who was then the manager of the team before his September 2022 sacking.

In a report, Barry thought he would best develop learning under Tuchel. It has also been added that Tuchel is not only good at his job but also had great human qualities that contributed to Barry’s decision to remain with the team as well as decline other head coach roles.

In a twist, Tuchel was sacked in early September 2022 after the Blues lost in their Champions League group stage opener versus Dinamo Zagreb on. This led Anthony Barry to be named an interim manager of the team until a replacement is found.

Barry’s appointment will lead to his first match after Tuchel. The match will be against the 1879-founded English team, Fulham on Saturday, September 10, 2022. The football game will take place at the Craven Cottage football ground.
