Hence, Antonio Margarito who is also known as El Tornado de Tijuana (The Tijuana Tornado) is a Mexican-American former professional boxer whose career in boxing lasted between 1994 and 2017.
Bio Of Antonio Margarito
Antonio Margarito was born Antonio Margarito Montiel on March 18, 1978, in Torrence, California to parents Antonio Margarito, Sr., father and Consuelo Margarito, mother.
When he was 2, his family moved to Tijuana, Mexico where he alongside his brother Manuel Margarito started to train in a boxing gym.
By the time he was 15 in 1994; Antonio had already made a good foundation for himself in boxing and was able to make his debut in a fight against Jose Trujillo. Margarito won the fight by decision.
He kept on with his professional boxing career until he held several welterweight world championships.
All About The Tough Career Of Margarito
Generally, it will be safe to say Antonio had quite a successful career from 1994 when he started to 2012 when he first retired and to his comeback in 2016 up until 2017.
Part of the success of his career is largely due to his fights with Daniel Santos, Diaz, Danny Perez Ramirez, Maurice Brantley, Hercules Kyvelos, and Miguel Cotto among others. In these fights, he was able to claim the WBO welterweight championship, reclaimed it, had one of the best fights of the year with Cotto, and won the previously undefeated Canadian Hercules.
As to his success, Antonio would go on to win 41 other games with 27 by Knockout and 14 by decision. In all, he became WBO champion from 2002 to 2007, held the IBF title in 2008, and the WBA (Super) title from 2008 to 2009.
Even amidst these successes, Antonio had his fair share of a tough career. In a fight against Manny Pacquiao in November 2010, Margarito ended up suffering a fractured right orbital bone and later suffered an injury in a rematch with Miguel Cotto.
Furthermore, one of his most difficult times as a boxer is not farfetched from the time he was caught with illegal hand wraps containing gypsum in 2009. This led to the doubting of his victory over Miguel Cotto a year earlier.
Following the incident with the wraps that were described as plaster of Paris, the California State Athletic Commission suspended Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo. In his defence, Antonio claimed to be unaware of what was in the wraps while his trainer also went ahead to claim he had no idea he mistakenly put the wrong wraps into the gloves of Margarito. As a result, he had earlier been banned from boxing in the United States.
Coming back after his suspension, Margarito needed to prove to the world he could fight without wraps and still win – a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately, he lost the fight and suffered bad eye damage.
