Ashley Harkleroad was born into the Harkleroad household on May 2, 1985, in Rossville, Georgia in the United States d America. Her father, Danny Harkleroad, at the time of her birth worked in the Printing business industry, while her mother, Tammy Harkleroad was an educator – a teacher more specifically. She began playing Tennis at 4, probably introduced to the sport by her mother who had also played the sport in college.

After training through to her teenage years, she finally made her first debut as a tennis player at the ITF tournament in Largo, Florida, a year after that she turned full-fledged tennis professional and began slugging it out on the courts with very notable names in the world of tennis.

The year 2002 was her breakthrough year as she won her first couple of matches and got to the second round of ITF tournaments both in Hawaii and San Diego, she also made the appearance of her first double, reaching the semi-finals, with her partner, Maria Salemi. She crowned the year by getting into the top 200 rankings.

In 2003, her game began to improve the better and she was able to defeat 3 Top-20 ranked players at Charleston before crashing out at the semi-final stage. Her performance at the tournament moved her from her # 101 ranking to # 56, and by June that same year, she reached her all-time high ranking of # 39.

The next few years saw her square up against the top players in the game of tennis and while she lost most of those games, she did so by giving the tennis Royale a run for the money (and time).

In 2009, after crashing out of the US Open series, she announced that she would be withdrawing indefinitely from tennis due to her pregnancy. She returned to the game in 2010 after giving birth to her son, but she never reached the same heights again and she finally retired from professional tennis in 2002, after 12 years in the sport.
