Barry Kramer Biography And Career: Is He Still Alive?

Barry Kramer is a retired American professional basketball player who is respected for being good at different things. As a matter of fact, he retired a jurist and an attorney.

During his career years, he excelled as a playmaker and this earned him several awards such as the Haggerty awards in 1963. However, it was after his retirement from basketball that he started his legal career journey in which he later rose through the ranks and became a New York State supreme court judge.

Barry Kramer Biography

Barry Kramer was welcomed into life on November 10, 1942, at Schenectady New York, United State. With regards to his education, Barry attended the Linto High School in Schenectady where he joined the school’s basketball team and was later listed in the parade All-American first team in 1960 after winning two sections II championships.

Upon his graduation from high school, Barry Kramer got accepted into the New York University and while he was in the University, Barry also played college basketball, where he was named as the Consensus All-American in 1963 as he ended up as the second top scorer in college basketball with an average of 29.3 points per game.

Again, his outstanding performance earned him the Haggerty awards in addition to being awarded the title of the best college basketball player within the New York City metropolitan area. Subsequently, Barry was inducted into the New York Athletic Hall of fame.

Barry Kramer Career

In 1964, Barry Kramer became the sixth pick in the NBA draft of that year while he was drafted by San Francisco Warriors. After his debut, Barry’s playtime in the NBA across a season, in which he spent some time playing for the Warriors as well as for the New York Knicks. In his performance, he had an average of 3.6 points per game, throughout the season.

It was in 1965 that he joined the New York Knicks, while in 1969 Barry played for the rival American basketball association club, the New York Nets. After spending a year with the Nets, Barry opted out and went into retirement from professional basketball in 1970.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t until in 2009 that Barry was inducted into the Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame, and he was acknowledged as the premier area basketball player over the past 50 years. Similarly, in 2014 Barry was also enlisted into the National Jewish Hall of fame.

Despite the fact that Barry’s professional basketball career experience was quite a short one, which lasted for only six years before he retired, he has imprinted his footprints in the sands of time in the field of basketball, and he has also received scores of awards which includes the Third Team All-American AP and NABC in 1964.

Legal Career

After retiring from his basketball, Barry Kramer decided to switch into the legal career and went on to study at the Albany Law School from where he graduated in 1968. After graduating as the overall second best student in his class, Barry became a practicing jurist and eventually, his expertise in the practice led to his appointment as a surrogate court judge in his hometown as he was appointed by the former governor Mario Cuomo in 1993. Again, Barry was still re-elected into the same office in 2003.

Progressively, Barry again got elected into the New York State Supreme Court, which was a-trial-level-court, under the New York’s Forth judicial district.

Insofar as Barry Kramer had reached the compulsory retirement age set for judges in 2012, he still kept on serving in the court under the auspices of the special certification process constituted mainly for retired judges who may wish to continue serving even after their retirement.

Is He Still Alive?

Some rumors have claimed, in the past, that Barry Kramer had died. However, this information is false. The man is still alive and well. He is married to his wife Pat and the couple is blessed with two children as well as one grandson.

Also, Barry has been a recipient of the Harold E Koreman Awards in 2001, and he also received a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by the Schenectady County Bar Association in 2018.
