Nimmer has said that at first, he began playing golf in South Carolina Junior Golf Association Tournaments. According to him, he got beaten up bad at first but he always believed that he would get better. He said was encouraged by people like Dustin Johnson, Lucas Glover, and Ben Martin who were also working hard to make a name for themselves. According to Nimmer, some days may be tough and rough but staying focused and optimistic will help one to make it through.

As an amateur at Clemson University, the golfer was a 3-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team selection. He was also a 2-time second-team All-American selection by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
