Darius Garland is an American basketball player who played as a point guard for the Vanderbilt Commodores from the Southeastern Conference. He was ranked number one on the list of top-level point guards in the class of 2018 by recruiters from across the country. He also played for Brentwood Academy while he went to high school there.
Thanks to his obvious and astounding talent, Garland was sought after by recruiters who wanted to snag him for their programs. He was fielding offers from practically every top ranking Division I program such as Duke, UCLA, Louisville, and Indiana. He announced that he would be committing to Vanderbilt University on November 13, 2017, where he would be furthering his education while playing on the school’s team.
Darius Garland Biography
Garland was born on January 26, 2000, in Gary, Indiana to former basketball star Winston Garland, who played seven professional seasons in the NBA and one season in Italy before retiring. The younger Garland began taken an interest in basketball when he was four and started playing with the Glen Park Biddy Basketball League as soon as he was old enough to do his own shoelaces. Whenever his father came come from work, Garland would beg him to put on his training shoes and come practice with him.
When he was only 11 years old, the young prodigy was already beating his father in one-on-one games. He was so incredibly skilled that he started playing two grades up and still ended up as the best player on whatever team he was in. His parents were put in a tough position because Garland’s talents were too advanced to play in a local AAU team, as he was already playing on travel teams while still in fourth grade.
It was a tough decision to make, but they decided to move from Gary, where they lived at the time, to Tennessee so Garland could play in a team that befitted his caliber. In Tennessee, he attended Brentwood, leading the squad to consecutive state Division II-AA titles. He was crowned Mr. Basketball for his efforts, becoming the second player to get named Mr. Basketball three consecutive times in state history.

With constant training and practice, Darius was soon averaging an impressive 22 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. He plays the game with an artistry that is rare and astounding. While at Brentwood he won four state championships a TSSAA record held in conjunction with the Eagles. By the time he was a senior, he was averaging 27.6 points in every game, shooting 59.7 percent from the field, helping his squad to a 25-5 record. Today, March 9 is known as Darius Garland Day in Brentwood, Tennessee.
College Stats
Garland decided to take his unique talents to Vanderbilt University because he had a great relationship with the coach, whom he had known since he was a little boy. He was the only freshman to get named to an All-SEC Preseason team. On his debut game against Winthrop, Garland proved himself supreme, scoring the highest goals of both teams, with 24 points to his name. He was named the 2018 McDonald’s all-American, the second Commodore to receive the honor, as well as a semi-finalist for Naismith National Player of the Year, and 2018 Gatorade Tennessee Player of the Year. Garland sustained a meniscus injury in the game against Kent State and it was announced that he would sit out the remainder of the 2018 season.
