He was raised with the wheels at his feet since his father was a sprint car and modified car champion. He has a younger brother Dale Blaney who was also a sprint car driver.
Even though he had a racer for a father, he had to wait till it was time for him to drive. As he waited for the time to come, he played basketball, serving as a point guard for the top-ranked Rev. Joseph Badger High School team in 1981. His brother Dale was also part of the Ohio Class A Championship team.
Well, it wasn’t just Dave and his brother Dale that played basketball in high school, their father played at the high school level too.
After high school graduation, Blaney took to racing when he was about 16 or 17, but he had no car of his own, so he started by using his father’s car. A car he never returned.

He won his first-ever World of Outlaws (WoO) race in 1987. He speeds to victory on the Eldora Speedway.
