Denny McCarthy was born in Takoma Park, Maryland on March 4, 1993. He attended Georgetown Preparatory School outside Washington, D.C. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Virginia where he played golf and became a two-time All-American.
He has three siblings: a brother and two sisters.

Denny McCarthy’s brother Ryan played college golf at Loyola University Maryland. His sister Christina played lacrosse at James Madison and his uncle, Mike McCarthy played golf at James Madison.
3. Amateur career
At the age of 10, Denny McCarthy started playing on the junior golf circuit and was successful on the MAPGA junior tour.
He also played on the 2012 Junior Ryder Cup team along with Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Ollie Schniederjans.
He became a senior at UVA and he led the United States to victory in the 2014 World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy). He also posted a final-round 8-under 64 and he was being the only American to shoot in the 60s and he finished the tournament 5th overall.
The golfer was selected to play on the U.S Walker Cup team in 2015 and his performance at the game gained him a spot on the team. He won the Maryland Amateur twice and also the Maryland Open three times. At the 2015 U.S. Open, McCarthy finished tied for 42nd.

Denny McCarthy turned professional after he played in the 2015 Walker Cup. He also played on the Web.com Tour for the 2016 season and finished the season with seven top-25 finishes including two top-10a in 21 events.
He also finished the year outside the top-25 and so remained on the Web.com Tour for the following season.
He finished with nine top-25 in 2017 and after finishing outside the top-25 in the regular season, he locked up his PGA Tour card in the Web.com Tour Finals.
