Desmond Bane’s mother Marissa Bane had him when she was only a teenager. Therefore, she left him in care of his great-grandparents’ care. Despite being separated from his parents, Desmond remained close to his mother. His father, Etieno Ekiko, was never in the picture.
Marissa Bane is now known as Marissa Haley and has three other children aside from the basketball player. She has been married to Terrill Haley since December 2013.
Who is Marissa Bane?
Desmond Bane’s mother was born on 24 May 1980 to her parents Robbie Willis and Sandra Bane. Her father played baseball at Washington State. Marisa’s father was an Indiana All-Star in 1977. She was raised alongside her siblings in a tight-knitted blended family.
Marissa attended Bishop Union High School.
Her Grandparents Raised Desmond Bane
Marissa Bane had her son Desmond in 1998 when she was still a teenager. Demond’s father, Etieno Ekiko left her when she was only 19. Together with her son and daughter, Anna, she moved around living with their relatives. Later on, Desmond went to stay with two of his aunts at different times before moving in with his great-uncle.
Desmond finally went to stay with his great-grandparents, Bob and Fabiola ‘Fabbie’ Bane. His great-grandparents were married for sixty-four years. Grandma Fabbie was a talented self-taught seamstress while Bob was an electrician and a facility manager. Together with her husband Bob, Fabbie was the pillar of their large family.
They both raised Desmond as a devoted Christian and also supported his dreams. They enrolled him at Seton Catholic High School. As he grew older, he showed more interest in baseball than basketball. However, before he settled for basketball, he played football in high school.
Marissa’s grandparents pushed Demond into participating in several sports because they did not want him to be influenced negatively by other kids in their neighborhood.
When her grandparents noticed her son loved watching the NBA games. Later on, they installed a regulation hoop outside their home. Her grannies are instrumental to her son’s stellar career as a basketball player.
While growing up, Desmond never saw his father. Reports say he only found out about him until he was 13. His great-grandfather and grandfather were the father figures in his life.
After raising Desmond in love, grandpa Bob died on July 20, 2020, at the age of 87. Barely a year later, grandma Fabbie also died on February 9, 2021, at the age of 81.
