Bravo, is the surname he goes by now and it was his stepfather’s. In his childhood, Edgar had interests in music and sports, particularly football and wrestling. It is said that he was also good at playing the guitar and drums.
By the time he was twenty-one, Eddie Bravo decided to move to Hollywood. This decision was inspired by his aspirations to become a musician. When he got to Hollywood, the first thing he did was to form a band, the band was called Blackened Kill Symphony. Edgar was aware of how important it is to look a certain way to succeed in the entertainment industry. This led to him signing up at a gym, a decision he did not follow through.
It was not until 1994 when he watched a UFC fight and witnessed the victory of the now-retired mixed martial artist, Royce Gracie, that he got on the path of martial arts. Eddie’s first teacher was Jean Jacques Machado, a member of the iconic Machado family.
By 1998, Eddie Bravo dedicated all of his training to master the art of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu and in the following year, he had earned a blue belt. It was the same year he created the rubber guard, which is a move that has earned him many victories.
2003 was the year Bravo participated in his first tournament and it was the Abu-Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC); when he joined the competition, he was a brown belt. He won the North American Trails and advanced to the quarter-finals where he fought Royler Gracie. He won the fight and this consolidated his position and reputation in the world of martial arts.
Eddie Bravo retired from competitive martial arts in 2014 and it was the same year he created a tournament called the Eddie Bravo Invitational. He currently has a black belt in jiu-jitsu and owns the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu School which he runs in Los Angeles. The 10th Planet uses and teaches jiu-jitsu methods that are not conventional; these techniques are mixed with Kodokan, Judo, Submission and Freestyle Wrestling.
The biggest gimmick of his school is martial arts training without the traditional gi uniform. The gi is worn during martial arts training but not worn during competitions and Bravo believes that training with the gi and fighting without one affects the way martial artists fight.
