She has managed to build a career that will make any parent proud.
Erin is a retired professional basketball player. She is also an Australian rules footballer in the AFL Women’s competition with the Adelaide Lightning. Erin works for ‘Dallas Wings’ as the Director of Player and Franchise Development and was recently promoted to assistant coach.
Erin Phillips Biography
Born Erin Victoria Phillips in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the 19th of May 1985, Erin grew up an ardent sports lover majorly because of her father – Greg Phillips who was an Australian rules footballer. She attended games with him and joined in the huddles during break. Coming from a family of talented sportsmen influenced her career positively.
The active and exceptional player has had a robust career on the basketball pitch and has turned to another career in Australian rules play after her official retirement from basketball.
Her playing career started in 2002 with Adelaide Lightning. In 2003, she landed a scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport and played for the institute in that years WNBL. She was among the WNBL’s All-Star Five.
Erin got selected in the 2005 WNBA draft by Connecticut Sun. In 2006, she had her first play in the league for Connecticut Sun. After some years of active play, she signed with Seattle Storm but got traded to Indiana Fever, Erin helped Indiana Fever to win 2012 Championship. Ahead of the 2014 season, she got traded to Phoenix Mercury where she assisted in winning the championship a second time.
Erin signed with Los Angeles Sparks in 2015 and was traded to Dallas Wings in 2016. She finally retired from active basketball play on the 14th of May 2017. It was within the same month of her retirement that her appointment as Director of Player and Franchise Development was announced. She has since been promoted to the position of an assistant coach.
She has represented Australia in the Olympic Games and the World Championship. In 2008 Olympics, her team won a silver medal. She also won in the 2006 and 2014 World Championship, a gold and bronze medal respectively.
During her years of active play, she played for Poland and Israel during off-seasons.
Erin grew up playing Australian rules football and she turned back to playing in 2016. She played with Adelaide Crows Football Club.
She had a knee injury in 2017 which incapacitated her and made her miss some games. Despite her injury, she won the Most Valuable Player Award
Dating and Partner
Erin is one of the sportsmen that are unapologetically in a same-sex marriage. She married Tracy Gahan her longtime girlfriend and fellow Adelaide Lightning teammate in 2014. This was years before same-sex marriage became legalized in Australia. The couple have welcomed a set of twins (Blake and Brooklyn and are expecting their third child who is due August 2019.
