Marcelo Gallardo was born in Merlo, Bueno’s Aires, Argentina on the 18th of January 1976. He was born to a mother called Ana María Maidana and a father identified as Máximo Gallardo. It is not certain if he has any siblings with whom he grew up.

Gallardo is now a married man. The football manager had an on and off relationship with Geraldine La Rosa before marrying her on the 19th of December 1997.

Gallardo started his football career in the 1992/1993 season with River Plate. He played as an attacking midfielder and won 4 Argentinian Torneo de Apertura, 1 Copa Libertadores, and 1 Argentinian Torneo de Clausura with the club.
He went ahead to play for Monaco in Europe, Paris Saint-Germain in France, D.C. United and also Nacional in the Uruguayan league winning several leagues and titles along the way. He had a very robust and successful career as a player which has influenced his successful coaching career.

There have been a lot of rumors over the years linking Marcelo Gallardo with a move to Spanish club, Barcelona. It will be recalled that when former Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde was made the manager, he came under fire for his conservative playing style and poor results especially for his failure to win the Champions League.
Barcelona soon parted ways with Valverde but before that happened, there were lots of rumors that Gallardo will become the next coach after Valverde.
