Her family moved to Columbus when she was around the age of seven. Her parents are Italian immigrants from Salerno. Her extended family is still in Italy. Her father was a physician at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus while her mother teaches Italian at various colleges.
Di Lorenzo went to New Albany High School in New Albany, Ohio. She has three siblings among which the eldest, Cristina played tennis at the collegiate level at Xavier University before she graduated in 2017. Her brother, Mario who is also an athlete won an intramural championship in the inaugural season of wheelchair basketball at Ohio State University.

Di Lorenzo began her amateur career shortly after she left high school. She was even ranked as the nation’s top tennis recruit. She went further to play collegiate tennis at Ohio State University. At her final tournament as a junior, she was able to reach the semifinals in both the girls’ singles and doubles tournaments at the 2015 US Open.
Di Lorenzo began her season as a freshman when she won the USTA/ITA National Indoor intercollegiate championship. She claimed the Buckeyes’ first national title in its program’s history. Di Lorenzo defeated Joana Eidukonyte during the championship match and ended the season with a 37-5 record. She was eventually named singles all-American and had other victories in the same season.
The tennis player went 37-2 in singles during her sophomore year with the buckeyes. She also finished the year as the top-ranked women’s NCAA singles player. She later beat Hayley carter as she repeated the USTA/ITA National Indoor Champion title. She rounded up her sophomore season when she won the NCAA Women’s Doubles with Miho Kowase, her partner. It was the first championship in NCAA in its history. Because of her incredible performance and accomplishments during the season, she got named both singles and doubles all-American.
At the 2017 US Open, Francesca Di Lorenzo earned a wild card into the qualifiers of the singles tournament. She also received a wild card for the main draw of the doubles tournament and made grand slam debut partnering with Allie Kiick.
She left Ohio State after she made the announcement on December 18, 2017, to focus on becoming a professional tennis player. Di Lorenzo made her grand slam singles debut at the 2018 US Open just after she won her section of the qualifying tournament winning against Antonia Lottner, Veronica Cepede Royg, and Mona Barthel. She scaled through to the second round where she was defeated by No. 13 seed, Kiki Bertens.

Di Lorenzo’s partner is mistaken to be Miho Kowase who is also a tennis player and a native of Tokyo, Japan. Kowase is a sophomore on the Ohio State women’s tennis team. The two have only been playing partners who have claimed the program’s first NCAA championship, the double titles in Athens, Georgia. Kowase ended her career after the championship in Athens, she finished with 213 career singles and doubles victories. The win was not their first title, but it was considered a big win for the program.
