Heidi Watney was born on May 19, 1981, in Fresno, California, United States. She grew up with her parents, Mike Watney and Paula Watney, and her four siblings. Her father has worked as a golf coach since 1979 at Fresno State Athletics and California State University before he later served in the US army. Her mother worked as a reporter.

While she was growing up, Watney and her family moved to different places because of her father’s work in the army. During his time in Vietnam, Heidi Watney spent 2 years with him.

She attended Clovis West High School in Fresno and she participated in the school’s sporting activities and also the cheerleading team. She was awarded the National Merit Scholarship after she graduated from high school. The scholarship was funded by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. She then joined the University of San Diego and graduated with a distinction in Journalism in 2003.

Watney began her broadcasting career in September 2003 with KMPH-TV(FOX 26) in Fresno but before that time, she modeled for some time. She first began as a morning traffic reporter than the weekend sports anchor and later weekday sports reporter.

Heidi Watney joined New England Sports Network (NESN), Boston in 2008 after she moved to Massachusetts. She has worked both as an on-field reporter and has hosted for the Red Sox report and the ultimate Red Sox report. She left NESN in 2001.

Watney continued as a reporter at the Time Warner Cable Sportsnet and spent a year there before she started her collaboration with the MLB Network as a studio host for MLB. She is known to have anchored quick pitch, nightly highlights, and also a morning show, hot stove.
