Hugo Sanchez Marquez was born on the 11th of July 1958 in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. His mother is Maria Isabel while his father is Hector Sanchez, a man who also played the sport professionally. Hugo and his father are not the only members of the Sanchez family who have a keen interest in sports. His older brother Horacio was also a footballer while his sister, Herlinda, was a gymnast.
A recurring theme in the lives of the Sanchezs is the excellence they brought to their respective sports. This excellence is one that Hugo started to display as a teenager when he played for his country during the summer Olympics of 1976. By the time he was 18, he had played in more than seventy matches internationally. After playing for his country, he began to play for Pumas de la UNAM, a club in the Mexican league. He was with this team for five seasons before moving to the North American Soccer League with the San Diego Sockers and then back to the Pumas. For every game he managed to score one goal, gaining a reputation as a fine forward.
The next club he joined was Atletico Madrid where he played for four years and in that time he scored 54 goals. But the peak of his career was with Real Madrid where he played for seven years, appearing in 207 games and netting a total of 164 goals. As a result of his amazing goal-scoring abilities, he was put in the position of center forward.
Sanchez’s playing was characterized by volleying, scissor kicks, and acrobatic means of scoring goals; thanks to his background in gymnastics. He is also credited for inventing what is called the scorpion kick.
Hugo Sanchez retired from playing football in 1997 and by 2000, he took on the job of a manager for the first club he played for, Pumas de la UNAM. When he joined the team as a manager, they were significantly struggling but with his input, they went from being bottom tier to winning every game they played. He also had the opportunity to coach his country’s national team, which he played for as a teenager. Sanchez currently works as a commentator for ESPN in Mexico and he is sometimes required to commentate on games in the United State.
