Idrissa Gueye was born Idrissa Gana Gueye on 26th September 1989 in Dakar, the capital of Senegal by his mother Marie Gueye, and his father whom he hasn’t revealed anything about. The midfielder grew up together with his two brothers.
As a child, his unquenchable thirst for soccer often makes him rush his meals so that he would go join his friends to play street football. They usually play on sandy paths without boots, using tiny rocks for goalposts. At the end of the day, they all go home with their feet bleeding.
After turning 14, he stopped playing on the street as his family moved to Saly, a town where Diambers Academy was located. He grabbed the opportunity by enrolling in the academy to hone his soccer skills.
Gueye drew the attention of football scouts all the way from France. He joined Lille in 2008 after spending 5 years at Diambers. He grew through the club’s youth teams, making it to the first team in the 2010/11 League 1 season.
Subsequently, he played for Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain.

1. Gueye Had It Rough On The First Day Of His Lille Training
Recounting his first day of training with Lille, Gueye said he didn’t find things easy after his arrival, as it was always raining. He remembers how it rained during his first training sessions. Everything was going so fast for him since he was used to playing on the sands in Senegal, but it was different in his new setup.
2. He Played Alongside Some Of The Finest Players At Lille
Gueye played together with some of the finest talents the Ligue 1 side has ever had. At the time, Eden Hazard, Gervinho, Moussa Sow, and Yohan Cabaye were also in the club. Motivated by the presence of these players, Lille had an amazing season winning the league and other cups in 2011.
3. Gueye Moved To The English Premier League After 7 Seasons At Lille
The Senegalese midfielder needed a change of environment, so he focused his lenses on England, signing for Aston Villa. The EPL side acquired the player at a reported fee of £9 million in July 2015.
He made his first EPL appearance for the club in a 1-0 away win at AFC Bournemouth. He went on to register his first goal and only goal in a Villa jersey in a 2-0 3rd round FA Cup replay against Wycombe Wanderers.
Unfortunately, failed to maintain a place in the EPL and it suffered relegation at the end of the 2015/16 season.
4. His Move To Everton Was Possible After The Club Triggered A Release Clause To Sign Him From Aston Villa
Following Villa’s relegation from EPL, Everton triggered a release clause in the midfielder’s contract, offering him a 4-year contract for a fee said to be around £7.1 million. He joined the club at the start of the 2016/17 EPL season on 2nd August 2016.

Gueye had the best of best of his EPL career during the 2016/17 season, making the highest number of successful tackles and interceptions per game in the top 5 European leagues. And consequently, at the end of the season, he completed 100 tackles, becoming the first player to do so in Europe’s 5 major leagues.
